You'll spot it from afar, yet the visual impact remains absolute when you pass through the great gate: the Taj Mahal rises at the end of its 17-hectare Mughal garden, flanked by four 42-meter minarets slightly tilted outward - an earthquake-resistant design feature. Shah Jahan commissioned it between 1632 and 1648 in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their fourteenth child. 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants were mobilized, and 28 types of precious stones were inlaid into the white marble from Rajasthan. Arrive at opening time at sunrise to avoid the crowds - and note that the site is closed on Fridays.
⏱ 90 minAgra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands 2.5 km from the Taj Mahal on the banks of the Yamuna River. This red sandstone fortress, built from 1565 onward by Emperor Akbar, covers 38 hectares with 21-meter-high ramparts. Don't miss the Shah Burj, the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan spent his final eight years in captivity, imprisoned by his own son Aurangzeb. From the pierced marble window, he gazed at the distant Taj Mahal - you'll see the same view.
⏱ 75 minContinue to the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, nicknamed the 'Baby Taj.' Built between 1622 and 1628 by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, it's the first Mughal structure entirely covered in marble with pietra dura inlays - the technique that would later be perfected at the Taj Mahal. The building is smaller and less crowded, giving you time to admire the intricate details.
⏱ 45 min
Late in the day, cross the Yamuna to reach Mehtab Bagh, a former Mughal garden facing the Taj Mahal. It's the best vantage point for sunset - the marble shifts from white to pink to orange. Photographers flock here, so arrive 45 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot.

The Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, is Jaipur's postcard image - a five-story pink sandstone facade pierced with 953 small honeycomb windows. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, it allowed the women of the royal harem to observe street life without being seen. Climb to the top for views over the bazaar below. In the morning, when sunlight strikes the facade, the colors are at their most beautiful.
⏱ 45 minThe City Palace of Jaipur occupies one-seventh of the fortified old city. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II - the astronomer who also designed Jantar Mantar - it blends Rajput, Mughal, and European architecture. In the Pitam Niwas courtyard, four carved doors represent the four seasons. The museum houses a collection of textiles, weapons, and two enormous 1.6-meter-tall silver urns - the largest in the world - that were used to transport Ganges water for the maharaja's journey to London.
⏱ 75 minAmber Fort rises 11 km north of Jaipur, on a hill overlooking Lake Maota. Built from 1592 by Raja Man Singh, it combines red sandstone and white marble. The Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace) is the centerpiece - thousands of glass fragments and mirrors line the walls and ceiling. With a single candle, the entire chamber illuminates. Arrive early - tour groups descend from 10am onward.
⏱ 90 minJust below the fort, detour to Panna Meena Ka Kund, a 16th-century stepwell. Its symmetrical zigzagging staircases descend eight levels - the geometric effect is striking. The site is rarely visited by tour groups, giving you time to photograph in peace.
⏱ 20 minAt sunrise, operators offer cycling tours through the old city lanes - flower markets, morning temples, and breakfast of lassi and kachori from street vendors. Count on about 2h30 with a departure around 6am.
⏱ 150 minMake a photo stop at Patrika Gate, a monumental archway in vibrant colors at the entrance to Jawahar Circle Garden. Each of the nine pavilions represents a region of Rajasthan with its traditional frescoes. The light is best in late afternoon.
⏱ 30 minIf you have energy left late in the day, push on to Galtaji Temple, nestled at the back of a rocky valley east of the city. This 18th-century temple complex is fed by a natural spring that fills sacred pools. Macaque monkeys are everywhere - keep your belongings secure.

Pushkar's sacred lake is one of Hinduism's most revered pilgrimage sites. According to legend, Brahma dropped a lotus petal at this spot, creating the lake. 52 ghats descend to the water - Varaha Ghat and Brahma Ghat are the busiest. Priests will offer you a puja (prayer ceremony) at the water's edge - you're free to politely decline if you don't wish to make a donation.
⏱ 60 minPushkar's Brahma Temple is one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to this deity - Hindu tradition explains this rarity through a curse from his consort Sarasvati. The current temple dates to the 14th century, with a marble facade adorned with silver coins. Remove your shoes and any leather items before entering.
⏱ 30 minFor a sweeping view over the town and lake, climb to Savitri Temple, perched on a hill to the southwest. The ascent by stairs takes about 30 minutes - a cable car also exists if you prefer to save your legs. From the summit, the panorama over Pushkar, the lake, and the Thar Desert on the horizon is superb, especially at sunset.
⏱ 45 minWander through Pushkar's bazaar - narrow lanes thick with incense, embroidered fabrics, silver bracelets, and colored powders. The town is strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free due to its sacred character. Try malpua, a fried sweet pancake served with rabdi - it's the local specialty.
⏱ 60 minLate in the day, return to sit on the ghats for the evening aarti ceremony. Priests light oil lamps and devotees place them on the water - the reflection of flames on the lake in the fading light is a moment of absolute calm.

Mehrangarh Fort has dominated Jodhpur since 1459, perched 122 meters above the 'blue city.' Founded by Rao Jodha on the 'Hill of Birds,' its ramparts of 6 to 36 meters high were carved from the hill's very rock. Seven gates lead to a succession of richly decorated palaces - the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), and Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace). You'll find more than 250 different jali patterns, those pierced stone screens that filter light. The museum is one of Rajasthan's finest - royal palanquins, Marwar costumes, weapons collection. Allow at least 2 hours.
⏱ 120 minDescending from the fort, stop at Jaswant Thada, one kilometer below. This white marble cenotaph, erected in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in tribute to his father Jaswant Singh II, captures sunlight remarkably - the marble is so thin in places that light passes through it. The surrounding gardens, with their small lakes, offer a peaceful haven after the fort's bustle.
⏱ 40 minThe Clock Tower, in the heart of the old city, marks the entrance to Sardar Market - a sprawling bazaar where you'll find spices, fabrics, embroidered shoes, and silver jewelry. The lanes plunge into a labyrinth of colors and scents. Bargain - it's expected and even appreciated.
⏱ 45 minTwo steps from the market, descend a few stairs to discover Toorji Ka Jhalra, a recently restored 18th-century stepwell. Less known than Jaipur's, it's bordered by terrace cafes - a good spot for a midday break.
⏱ 20 min
Lose yourself in the lanes of the Blue City - the Navchokiya and Brahmpuri quarters at the foot of the fort. Houses are painted indigo blue, a color originally reserved for Brahmins but also reputed to repel mosquitoes and cool interiors. The contrast between the blue facades, the fort's red sandstone, and the desert sky is one of Rajasthan's most photogenic sights. Go in late afternoon for the best light.
⏱ 75 minIn the evening, climb to one of the old city's rooftop restaurants to see Mehrangarh Fort illuminated in the night - the spectacle from the rooftops is stunning, especially with a Rajasthani thali in front of you.

Udaipur's City Palace is Rajasthan's largest palace complex - 244 meters long by 30 meters high, built from 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, the city's founder. The ensemble blends granite, marble, and mirror mosaics across four centuries of construction. From the upper balconies, views plunge over Lake Pichola and the Aravallis. Allow at least 1h30 for the museum section.
⏱ 90 minLake Pichola was artificially created in 1362. Boats take you to Jag Mandir island, a 17th-century marble palace where the future Emperor Shah Jahan - the same who would build the Taj Mahal - took refuge during a revolt against his father. The crossing takes 15 minutes and gives you time to admire the Lake Palace (now a luxury hotel) sitting on the water like a white mirage.
⏱ 75 minStep through the door of Bagore Ki Haveli, an 18th-century mansion on the shore of Gangaur Ghat. Its 138 rooms house a museum of Rajasthani daily life - costumes, musical instruments, puppets. In the evening, a folk dance performance from Rajasthan is presented in the inner courtyard - the whirling Ghoomar dancers are mesmerizing.
⏱ 60 minOn the path between the City Palace and the lake, stop at Jagdish Temple, Udaipur's largest temple. Built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh, it's dedicated to Vishnu and its 24-meter pyramidal tower is carved with deities and dancers from top to bottom.
⏱ 25 minOperators offer Indian cooking classes in the old city - you'll learn to prepare dal baati churma, Rajasthan's emblematic dish, chapatis, and masala chai. Count on about 3 hours, hands-on.
⏱ 180 minFor your final evening, head to Ambrai Ghat on the shore opposite the City Palace. It's the best viewpoint for sunset over the lake - the palace reflects in the calm water and the Aravalli hills glow red on the horizon. Stay until nightfall to see the City Palace illuminated.
