Jag Mandir, on an island in Lake Pichola, is accessible only by boat from Bansi Ghat—and the crossing is part of the experience. The palace was built between 1551 and 1652 by three Maharanas. In 1623, Prince Khurram, in rebellion against his father Jahangir, took refuge here with his family. Later crowned Emperor Shah Jahan, he's said to have drawn inspiration from Jag Mandir when designing the Taj Mahal. Stroll through gardens of bougainvillea and jasmine, flanked by white marble elephant statues.

Rana Kumbha Palace, the most massive of the fort's ruins, dates in its earliest foundations to 734 under Bappa Rawal. Rebuilt by Maharana Kumbha in the 15th century, this is where Maharana Udai Singh was born—saved as a baby by his nursemaid Panna Dai, who reportedly hid him in a fruit basket to protect him from a usurper. The remains still show stables, water reservoirs and women's quarters (zenana). It's also the site of the terrible jauhars—the collective self-immolations of Rajput women facing invading armies.

You'll spot the Vijay Stambha (Tower of Victory) from afar—37 meters of red sandstone and white marble, 9 stories, 157 steps. Built between 1442 and 1449 by Rana Kumbha to celebrate his victory over the Sultan of Malwa. The interior is carved floor to ceiling: Hindu deities, seasonal allegories, weapons, musical instruments. On the fifth floor, look for portraits of architect Jaita and his three sons—a rare signature for the era. The view from the top embraces all of Chittorgarh.

Smaller at 22 meters but older, the Kirti Stambha (Tower of Fame) dates from the 12th century. Dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain master, it's adorned with Jain sculptures across its entire surface. The 54 steps lead to the top via a very narrow staircase—claustrophobics beware. It testifies to the religious coexistence that prevailed in the fort.

Make a detour to the Mirabai Temple, built in classic north Indian style. It commemorates the famous 16th-century mystic poet, a Krishna devotee whose fervor scandalized the royal court. Raniji ki Baori is the largest of Bundi's 50 stepwells—and one of Rajasthan's most impressive. Built in 1699 by Queen Nathavati Ji Solanki, it plunges 46 meters deep. You enter on the second level through an arched portal flanked by marble elephant statues. Each level houses a place of worship, and the pillars are carved with figures of Vishnu—look for his incarnations as Varaha (boar), Matsya (fish) and Narasimha (man-lion). The entrance is small and easy to miss on the main street.
