Thiruvananthapuram

Start with Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the heart of Trivandrum's East Fort. This temple dedicated to Vishnu blends Kerala and Dravidian architectural styles—its seven-tier gopuram is covered in finely chiseled sculptures. Inside, the deity's idol measures 5.5 meters long and reclines on the serpent Anantha, visible through three separate doors. In 2011, the opening of its underground vaults revealed a treasure estimated at $22 billion, making it the world's richest temple. Important note: only Hindus may enter, and there's a strict dress code—men must wear a dhoti (available for rent at the entrance) and remove their upper garment.

⏱ 60 min
2

Just beside the temple, step into Kuthiramalika Palace. Built in the 1840s by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, a musician and patron of the arts, this palace of teak and rosewood takes its name from the 122 carved horses adorning the consoles that support the southern roof. Of its 80 rooms, only 20 are open to the public—you'll see two royal thrones, one fashioned from 24 elephant tusks, the other from Bohemian crystal. Don't miss the musical tree, an object that produces eight different sounds when struck in different places. Closed Mondays.

⏱ 50 min
3

Late in the day, head to Kovalam, 16 km south of Trivandrum. This former fishing village became famous in the 1930s when the Queen Regent of Travancore built Halcyon Castle here. Three crescent beaches follow one another: Lighthouse Beach is the liveliest, Hawa Beach draws Indian families, and Samudra Beach remains the quietest. Settle in at Lighthouse Beach for sunset—the golden light on the coconut palms and fishing nets is a sight not to be missed. If you have time, climb the Vizhinjam lighthouse for a panoramic view of the coast.

⏱ 90 min

Activities

In the evening, sit down for a seafood dinner facing the Arabian Sea. The beachfront restaurants in Kovalam serve grilled fish, king prawns, and crab masala accompanied by rice and coconut curry. If you're curious, try the karimeen pollichathu, a local fish cooked in a banana leaf—it's one of Kerala's signature dishes.

⏱ 60 min

To recover from jet lag, book an Ayurvedic massage at one of Kovalam's wellness centers. Kerala is the birthplace of Ayurveda, and Kovalam concentrates an impressive offering of traditional centers. Expect about an hour for an abhyanga, the classic warm oil massage.

Munroe Island

★★★★★
Munroe Island
1

Munroe Island is an archipelago of eight islets at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, 25 km from Kollam. Here, no crowded houseboats like in Alleppey—you glide in a dugout canoe, maneuvered with a bamboo pole, through channels so narrow that palm fronds brush your shoulders. The island takes its name from Colonel John Munro, a British administrator of Travancore in the 19th century. Book a morning paddle of 2 to 3 hours: you'll pass through natural mangrove arches, drift past houses on stilts, and cross paths with fishermen casting their nets. This is the peaceful, authentic alternative to the touristy backwaters.

⏱ 120 min
2

After the canoe ride, explore the village by bicycle—most homestays lend bikes free of charge. The 5 km loop around the island is flat and shaded by coconut palms. You'll traverse coconut plantations, paddy fields, and coir-making workshops. Stop at Edachal bridge to watch fishermen at work, and if you come across a coir workshop, ask for a demonstration—artisans have been hand-braiding the fiber for generations.

⏱ 75 min
Munroe Island

Activities

Late in the day, join a Kerala cooking class at a local home. Your host will show you how to prepare a traditional fish curry with coconut milk, appam (fermented rice pancakes), and aviyal, a mixed vegetable dish typical of Kerala. You'll eat everything served on a banana leaf, sitting on the floor in local style. It's also a chance to taste toddy, a mildly alcoholic drink tapped from coconut palm sap—the local specialty.

Alappuzha

Alleppey—or Alappuzha, its official name—is nicknamed the Venice of the East. The backwaters stretch here across more than 900 km of canals, lagoons, and lakes connected to the Arabian Sea. Board a kettuvallam, a former rice transport barge converted into a floating home. The cruise crosses Punnamada Lake, the Kuttanad rice paddies (cultivated below sea level, a unique case in India), and villages accessible only by water. If you book an overnight stay aboard, the chef cooks Kerala dishes using fish caught that very morning. Plan for an early afternoon departure—boats must dock before sunset.

⏱ 240 min
2

If you don't opt for a night on the houseboat, head to Alleppey Beach late in the day. It's less famous than Kovalam but has its charm—a long ribbon of sand bordered by palms where fishermen haul in their nets at dusk. Climb the Alleppey lighthouse, built in 1862 and open to visitors in the afternoon: the view from the top over the coast and backwaters is worth the effort.

⏱ 60 min

Activities

Alleppey is the heart of Kerala's coir production. Take advantage of your visit to tour an artisan workshop where coconut fiber is transformed into ropes, mats, and nets. Afterward, sample local coconut-based specialties: puttu (steamed rice and coconut cake), avial, and payasam, a dessert made with coconut milk and cashews. Several small canal-side restaurants serve these dishes on banana leaves.

Munnar

★★★★☆
Munnar
1

The drive from Alleppey to Munnar takes 4 to 5 hours, but it's magnificent—you pass from flat paddy fields to the first hills of the Western Ghats, with waterfalls along the way (stop at Cheeyappara if you have time). Munnar sits at 1,600 m altitude, and tea plantations stretch as far as the eye can see across the hills. The first plants were installed here by Scottish planters in the late 19th century. Wander through the rows of tea bushes—the Kannan Devan estate alone covers 24,000 hectares. For a real immersion, ask to observe the morning picking (7am-9am), when women in saris move through the fields with their large baskets.

⏱ 120 min
2

Step into the Munnar Tea Museum (Kannan Devan Tea Museum), 3.5 km from town center. Inaugurated in 2005 by the Tata Group, it traces the history of the plantations from the British pioneers. You'll see a manual tea roller from 1905, a 1920s Pelton wheel that powered the factories, and a locomotive wheel from the railway that ran between Munnar and Top Station. The museum offers two demonstration sessions per day (10am and 2pm) and a paid tasting of different teas. Closed Mondays. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.

⏱ 60 min
Munnar

Activities

Wake before dawn to watch sunrise from Munnar's hills. The most spectacular viewpoints are Pothamedu (5 km from town center) and Top Station (32 km away, Munnar's highest point at 1,880 m). When the mist lifts from the green undulations of the plantations, the spectacle is breathtaking. Bring a sweater—at this altitude, mornings are cool, often around 10°C.

⏱ 90 min

If you have energy to spare, hike in Eravikulam National Park, 15 km from Munnar. This 97 km² park in the Western Ghats is home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr, a wild goat that's surprisingly approachable here. The main trail runs about 2 km round-trip across grassy slopes. Every twelve years, these hills blanket themselves in blue neelakurinji flowers—the next bloom is expected in 2030.

Second day in Munnar: head to Mattupetty Dam, 13 km from town center. This artificial lake surrounded by tea-covered hills and shola forests is one of the region's most beautiful spots. You can take a motorboat tour on the lake, or simply walk along the shore to enjoy the calm. On the way, stop at Echo Point—shout toward the hills and your voice bounces back clearly. It's touristy, but kids love it.

⏱ 90 min
2

Continue to Kundala Lake, 20 km from Munnar. This high-altitude lake is surrounded by tea plantations and forests. Pedal boats and shikaras (small traditional boats from Kashmir) are available for a leisurely ride. The road there winds through postcard-perfect landscapes—keep your camera ready.

⏱ 60 min

Activities

Between sites, make a stop at Chinnakanal Waterfalls (also called Power House Falls), 18 km from Munnar. Water tumbles from 2,000 m altitude through dense vegetation—a particularly impressive sight after the monsoon. The path to get closer is short but slippery, so wear good shoes.

⏱ 30 min

End the day with a jeep tour of a tea plantation. The Lockhart estate, accessible only by 4x4, offers an experience away from the crowds: you drive between rows of tea bushes, watch the manufacturing process in the mini-factory, and taste freshly brewed tea. Kochi

Kochi 1

Fort Kochi is a concentrated dose of colonial history unique in India. Start with the Chinese fishing nets along the northeastern shore: these 10-meter-high teak structures, operated by stone counterweights, were allegedly introduced by Chinese traders in the 14th century, during the era of Kublai Khan's court. Fewer than ten remain today—arrive early morning to see them in action and avoid the crowds. Just beside, fishermen sell the day's catch: you can buy fresh fish and have it grilled at the small roadside stalls.

⏱ 45 min
2

A five-minute walk away, you'll find St. Francis Church, built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscans—it's the oldest European church in India. Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1524 before his remains were transferred to Lisbon fourteen years later. The pale yellow facade conceals a sober interior, with hand-operated cloth fans (punkah). Don't miss Santa Cruz Basilica either, a few streets away—rebuilt in the late 19th century after its destruction by the British, it's one of India's eight basilicas.

⏱ 45 min
3

Head to Mattancherry: the Dutch Palace was gifted to the Raja of Kochi by the Portuguese in 1545, then renovated by the Dutch in 1663. Inside, you'll discover exceptional murals illustrating scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata—some cover entire walls and rank among Kerala's finest mural paintings. The palace is built in the nalukettu style, typical of South India, with a central courtyard and a temple dedicated to Krishna. Open 10am to 5pm, closed Fridays. Photography is prohibited inside.

⏱ 60 min
4

Finish with Jew Town and the Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 and partially destroyed by the Portuguese in 1662 before being rebuilt by the Dutch. Its floors are paved with hand-painted Chinese faience tiles, imported in the 18th century—no two are alike. Belgian crystal chandeliers illuminate the prayer hall. Kochi's Jewish community, once thriving, now numbers only a handful of members. The surrounding lanes overflow with antique shops and spice vendors—the scent of pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom hits you as soon as you enter the street.

⏱ 45 min

Activities

In the evening, attend a Kathakali performance at one of Fort Kochi's cultural centers. This traditional Kerala dance-drama combines elaborate makeup (taking 2 hours to prepare), extravagant costumes, and codified eye movements. Arrive early to watch the artists apply their makeup—it's a spectacle in itself. Performances last about 1.5 hours.

Mysuru

★★★☆☆
Mysuru
1

The Maharaja's Palace of Mysore is one of India's most visited monuments after the Taj Mahal. Built between 1897 and 1912 by British architect Henry Irwin, it blends Indo-Saracenic, Gothic, and Hindu styles. The durbar (audience) halls are covered in gold leaf, stained glass, carved columns, and solid silver doors. The golden throne, made of fig wood plated with 280 kg of gold, is brought out only during the Dasara festival in October. Allow 1.5 hours for the visit. Important: you must remove your shoes, and cameras are prohibited inside.

⏱ 90 min
2

After the palace, dive into Devaraja Market, a ten-minute walk away. This covered bazaar, one of Mysore's oldest, overflows with pyramids of flowers (jasmine, roses, marigold), spices, tropical fruits, and silks. Don't leave without trying the crispy dosas from the stalls—Mysore masala dosas, stuffed with spiced potatoes and green chutney, are a local specialty. If you have a sweet tooth, Mysore pak (a ghee and chickpea flour cake) is a classic.

⏱ 60 min
Mysuru

Activities

On Sundays and public holidays, as well as during Dasara, the palace lights up with 97,000 bulbs at 7pm. The spectacle lasts about an hour and transforms the building into a golden jewel against the night. Even on weekdays, stroll through the illuminated gardens. Arrive 30 minutes early to secure a good spot—crowds can be dense.

⏱ 60 min

If you have time in the afternoon, climb Chamundi Hill (1,065 m), 13 km from town center. You can drive up or climb the 1,000 steps. Along the way, you'll pass the monolithic Nandi, 5 meters high and carved from a single block of black granite. At the summit, Chamundeshwari Temple offers a panorama over the entire city and surrounding plains.

Hampi

★★★★☆
Hampi 1
Hampi 2
Hampi 3
1

Hampi has been a UNESCO site since 1986—the ruins of the former Vijayanagara Empire capital (14th-16th centuries) sprawl across 26 km² among enormous ochre granite boulders. Begin with Virupaksha Temple, the only one still active, dedicated to Shiva. Its 50-meter gopuram tower dominates the main bazaar. Inside, in a dark chamber, you'll witness an astonishing phenomenon: the inverted image of the gopuram projects naturally onto the wall through a camera obscura effect. Arrive early morning to beat the heat—it can be crushing after 11am.

⏱ 75 min
2

Continue to Vittala Temple, 2.5 km northeast. This is Hampi's jewel: its stone chariot, drawn by carved elephants, appears on 50-rupee notes. The 56 musical pillars in the main hall produce different notes when struck—a 16th-century engineering feat. Take a tuk-tuk or rent a bicycle to connect the two temples; walking in full sun is exhausting.

⏱ 75 min

Activities

Late in the day, climb Matanga Hill for sunset. The ascent takes about 20 minutes via a rocky trail—wear good shoes and bring water. From the summit, the 360° view over the ruins, rice paddies, Tungabhadra River, and granite boulders is one of Karnataka's most beautiful. Descend before dark—the path isn't lit.

⏱ 75 min

To explore the ruins further afield, rent a bicycle for the day and tour the royal enclosure: the Lotus Mahal (a pavilion in Indo-Islamic style), the elephant stables (eleven aligned domes), and the Queen's Bath. Allow 2 to 3 hours to cover this area by bike at a leisurely pace.

Badami

★★☆☆☆
Badami 1
Badami 2
1

Badami boasts four rock-cut temples carved into red sandstone cliffs between the 6th and 8th centuries by the Chalukya dynasty. Cave Temple 1, dedicated to Shiva, is the oldest—you'll see a sculpture of Nataraja (dancing Shiva) displaying 81 codified dance positions. Cave Temple 3, the largest and most impressive, is dedicated to Vishnu and dates to 578 CE—the date is carved in stone. The sculptures are remarkably refined for their era. Wear good shoes—the stairways cut into the rock are steep and slippery.

⏱ 90 min
2

Below the caves, Agastya Lake forms a turquoise mirror framed by sandstone cliffs. Walk around it (about 30 minutes) to discover small temples and shrines carved into the rock on the opposite shore. If you're feeling brave, climb to Badami Fort via the trail starting from the lake's north side—the view from the fort ruins embraces the entire valley and the caves below.

⏱ 60 min

Activities

Make the most of your day in Badami by taking an excursion to Pattadakal and Aihole, respectively 22 and 34 km away. This Chalukya archaeological triangle is UNESCO-listed (for Pattadakal). At Pattadakal, you'll see about ten temples from the 7th-8th centuries blending Dravidian (southern) and Nagara (northern) styles. Aihole, often called the cradle of Hindu temple architecture, counts more than 120 temples scattered across a plateau. Allow half a day for both sites together.

The Gol Gumbaz in Bijapur (now Vijayapura) houses the world's second-largest unsupported dome after St. Peter's in Rome, with an interior diameter of 37.9 meters. Built in 1656 as the mausoleum of Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah, its whispering gallery at the dome's base amplifies the slightest sound spectacularly—a whisper from one side is clearly heard at the other end, 37 meters away. Climb the spiral staircase (seven floors) to access this gallery and enjoy a panoramic view over the city. Mind your ears—the noise can be deafening when school groups shout inside.

⏱ 75 min
2

One kilometer west, don't miss Ibrahim Rauza, often compared to a miniature Taj Mahal. This mausoleum and its adjoining mosque were built between 1615 and 1627 for Ibrahim Adil Shah II. The proportions are remarkably elegant, with finely carved arches, delicate minarets, and calligraphic stone inscriptions. Legend has it that Shah Jahan drew inspiration from it when designing the Taj Mahal. The site is much less crowded than Gol Gumbaz—take your time to savor it.

⏱ 60 min

Activities

Bijapur deserves some aimless wandering through its lanes: the citadel ramparts (6.5 km perimeter), Jami Masjid mosque with its 2,250 prayer spaces, and the numerous tombs and pavilions of the Adil Shahi sultans are scattered throughout the city. Rent an auto-rickshaw by the hour to cover the more distant sites. Late in the day, sunset from the ramparts is a welcome moment of calm after a day of sightseeing.

Chennai

From Bijapur, the most practical option is to reach Belgaum or Hubli airport (2.5 hours by road) for a domestic flight to Chennai—the direct drive is 600 km and about ten hours, which makes no sense. In Chennai, start with Marina Beach, stretching 13 km along the Bay of Bengal—it's one of the world's longest urban beaches. It's liveliest late in the day, when Chennaiites come to stroll and snack on sundal (spiced chickpeas) and bajji (vegetable fritters) sold by street vendors. Swimming is not recommended—the currents are strong.

⏱ 60 min

In the Mylapore district, Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a masterpiece of Tamil Dravidian architecture. Its main gopuram, covered with hundreds of colorful statues of gods and goddesses, rises 37 meters high. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and dates back to the 7th century, though the current structure is from the 16th century after the Portuguese destroyed the original. Unlike many southern temples, it's open to all. Visit late afternoon to witness the evening puja—the chants, bells, and incense create a captivating atmosphere.

⏱ 60 min

Activities

In the evening, explore Mylapore's restaurants for an authentic Tamil dinner. Order a vegetarian thali on a banana leaf—rice, sambar, rasam, various curries and chutneys, all eaten with your right hand. Tamil Nadu's filter coffee, prepared with hot milk and served in a steel tumbler (dabara set), is a ritual not to be missed.

Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) has been a UNESCO site since 1984—it's one of India's oldest rock art ensembles. Begin with the Shore Temple, built in the 8th century by Pallava king Narasimhavarman II. This granite temple facing the sea is one of South India's oldest structural stone temples. Two towers dedicated to Shiva and a Vishnu sanctuary stand facing the Bay of Bengal waves. Arrive at opening time (6am) to enjoy the golden morning light and tranquility—tour buses arrive after 9am.

⏱ 60 min

500 meters south, the Five Rathas (Pancha Rathas) are five monolithic temples each carved from a single granite block in the 7th century. Each bears the name of one of the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata and illustrates a different architectural style—from simple to complex. It's like an architectural textbook in stone. In front of the largest ratha, a life-size elephant was carved from the same rock.

⏱ 45 min

Don't miss the bas-relief of Arjuna's Penance (or Descent of the Ganges), a sculptural fresco 27 meters long and 9 meters high carved into a rock face. Hundreds of figures—gods, humans, animals, nagas—converge toward a central fissure representing the Ganges descending from heaven. It's one of the world's largest bas-reliefs. Just beside it, Krishna's Butter Ball is an enormous spherical boulder of 250 tons balanced on a slope—no one has ever managed to move it, not even the British with their elephants.

Pondicherry's French Quarter is a slice of tropical France: straight streets lined with bougainvillea, colonial houses with blue and yellow shutters, bilingual French-Tamil street signs. Wander through Suffren, Romain Rolland, and Dumas streets—the Franco-Tamil architecture buildings have been restored in recent years. Stop at the Promenade, the pedestrian seafront lined with benches facing the Bay of Bengal. On Sunday mornings, it's closed to cars and locals come to jog, walk, or simply sit facing the sea.

⏱ 75 min

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926, occupies several buildings in the French Quarter. The samadhi (tomb) of Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa (the Mother) sits in the main courtyard, beneath a frangipani tree—visitors deposit flowers in silence. Entrance is free, but contemplation is expected. Around the ashram, bookshops and boutiques sell handmade paper, incense, and textiles crafted by community members.

⏱ 45 min

Activities

Pondicherry is the perfect place for a Franco-Indian dinner at the end of your circuit. Several downtown restaurants offer menus that fuse French cuisine with Tamil flavors—curry crepes, tamarind shrimp bouillabaisse, or coconut tart. It's a nod to the unique history of this former French colony ceded to India in 1954.

⏱ 60 min

If you have an extra half-day, make the excursion to Auroville, 12 km north. This experimental township founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa brings together residents from over 50 nationalities. The Matrimandir, a golden sphere 29 meters in diameter at the city's center, is impressive—interior visits must be booked in advance at Auroville's visitor center. Even without entering, the view of the Matrimandir from the gardens is worth the trip.
