500 meters south, the Five Rathas (Pancha Rathas) are five monolithic temples each carved from a single granite block in the 7th century. In front of the largest ratha, a life-size elephant was carved from the same rock.

Don't miss the bas-relief of Arjuna's Penance (or Descent of the Ganges), a sculptural fresco 27 meters long and 9 meters high carved into a rock face. Hundreds of figures—gods, humans, animals, nagas—converge toward a central fissure representing the Ganges descending from heaven. It's one of the world's largest bas-reliefs. Just beside it, Krishna's Butter Ball is an enormous spherical boulder of 250 tons balanced on a slope—no one has ever managed to move it, not even the British with their elephants.
