Construction began in 1192 under Qutb ud-Din Aibak, Delhi's first sultan, and was completed by his successor Iltutmish. Look closely at the Arabic inscriptions that cover the tower from base to top — each floor features a different balcony style. You can no longer climb to the top (closed after an accident in 1981), but the base is impressive. Right next to it, stop by the 4th-century Iron Pillar that has resisted rust for 1,600 years — a metallurgical mystery no one has cracked yet.

India Gate, Delhi's triumphal arch, stands 42 metres tall. It honours the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died during World War I. In the evening, the monument is lit up and the esplanade becomes a promenade for local families. It's a good spot for a midday break.

Shah Jahan had it built between 1632 and 1653 in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth at 38. More than 20,000 artisans from India, Persia and Central Asia worked on it for 22 years. The white marble came from Makrana in Rajasthan (transported 300 km by elephants), and 28 types of semi-precious stones — lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, turquoise from Tibet, jade from China — make up the inlays. The dome reaches 73 metres. Note: the Taj is closed on Fridays. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the visit.

Continue to Agra Fort, 2.5 km from the Taj — another UNESCO site (1983) that too many visitors skip. Built by Emperor Akbar from 1565, this red sandstone fortress covers 38 hectares along the Yamuna River. This is where Shah Jahan spent his final eight years, imprisoned by his own son Aurangzeb — climb to the Musamman Burj tower to see what he saw: the Taj Mahal in the distance, forever out of reach. The view from this tower is one of the most heart-wrenching in all of India.

At the end of the day, cross the Yamuna to reach Mehtab Bagh (the Moonlight Garden) — this is THE spot to photograph the Taj Mahal at sunset. This 16th-century Mughal garden offers a head-on view perfectly aligned with the mausoleum on the opposite bank. Come 45 minutes before sunset to settle in comfortably.

This Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva was carved TOP-DOWN from the living rock, removing an estimated 200,000 tonnes of basalt. Begun under Rashtrakuta king Krishna I in the 8th century, it stands 33 metres tall and covers twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens. Every surface is sculpted — life-sized elephants, scenes from the Ramayana, deities. You'll have a hard time believing the whole thing was hewn from a single block of rock. Allow at least 1.5 hours for Kailasa alone.

Next, explore the Buddhist caves (Caves 1 to 12) — vast multi-storey monasteries carved from basalt. A 3-metre-tall Buddha sits before the stupa.
