Start with the Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 — its red sandstone walls rise 23 metres high and encircle a 100-hectare complex. Shah Jahan had it built between 1638 and 1648 as the imperial palace of his new capital, Shahjahanabad. Don't miss the Diwan-i-Khas, the Hall of Private Audiences, whose ceiling was once studded with precious stones. Every August 15th, India's Prime Minister hoists the national flag here — you'll spot the podium from the ramparts. Allow at least 1.5 hours, and arrive at opening time (9:30 AM) to beat the crowds.
⏱ 90 minJama Masjid is a five-minute walk from the Red Fort — it's the largest mosque in India, built by Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656. Its inner courtyard can hold 25,000 worshippers. Climb to the top of the south minaret (around 40 metres) for a 360° panorama over Old Delhi — you'll see the tangled rooftops of Chandni Chowk and, on a clear day, the Parliament dome in the distance. Remove your shoes at the entrance, and if you're wearing shorts, you'll be lent a sarong.
⏱ 60 minDive into Chandni Chowk, Delhi's oldest commercial artery — Shah Jahan laid it out in 1650. It's a labyrinth of alleyways where spices, fabrics, jewellery and electronics jostle for space. Make your way to Paranthe Wali Gali, a narrow lane famous for its paranthas fried in ghee — stalls have been serving them here since the 1870s. Fair warning: the crowds are intense, so keep your belongings close.
⏱ 75 minMake a detour to Raj Ghat, Gandhi's memorial — a slab of black marble marks the spot where he was cremated on January 31, 1948, one day after his assassination. The site is simple and deeply moving, surrounded by lawns. An eternal flame burns here at all times. Allow 30 minutes, barefoot on the marble.
⏱ 30 minTake a cycle-rickshaw ride through the alleyways of Old Delhi — it's the best way to weave between market stalls and sacred cows. Negotiate the fare before hopping on (expect around 30–45 minutes for a full tour of the neighbourhood). You'll pass the Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, a 17th-century Sikh temple you can enter freely — and even enjoy a free meal at the langar, the communal kitchen.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening, if you still have energy, catch the Red Fort's sound and light show — the 45-minute spectacle traces Mughal history with the illuminated walls as a backdrop. The English show starts around 8:30 PM (check times on-site, as they change with the season).

Head to New Delhi this morning — start with Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Built in 1570, it's the first great Mughal garden-tomb and the direct blueprint for the Taj Mahal, built 60 years later. The white marble dome stands 42 metres tall, surrounded by symmetrical gardens divided into squares (the Persian charbagh layout). Arrive early in the morning — the golden light on the red sandstone is stunning, and you'll have the place almost to yourself before 10 AM.
⏱ 75 minYou can't miss the Qutub Minar — this 72.5-metre brick tower is the tallest minaret in the world made from this material. Construction began in 1192 under Qutb ud-Din Aibak, Delhi's first sultan, and was completed by his successor Iltutmish. Look closely at the Arabic inscriptions that cover the tower from base to top — each floor features a different balcony style. You can no longer climb to the top (closed after an accident in 1981), but the base is impressive. Right next to it, stop by the 4th-century Iron Pillar that has resisted rust for 1,600 years — a metallurgical mystery no one has cracked yet.
⏱ 60 minIndia Gate, Delhi's triumphal arch, stands 42 metres tall. It honours the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died during World War I. In the evening, the monument is lit up and the esplanade becomes a promenade for local families. It's a good spot for a midday break.
⏱ 30 minFinish at Lodi Gardens, a 36-hectare park that houses 15th-century tombs from the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties — octagonal buildings set amid immaculate lawns. Delhiites come here to jog or picnic. If you have time, seek out the Tomb of Mohammed Shah (1450) and the Bara Gumbad Mosque.
⏱ 45 min
In the late afternoon, walk to the Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin — Delhi's most revered Sufi shrine, founded in the 14th century. Every Thursday evening, musicians perform qawwali in the courtyard — the atmosphere is electric, somewhere between devotion and trance. Arrive around 6 PM to settle in before the crowd thickens.
⏱ 75 minGet ready for your departure to Agra tomorrow morning: the Gatiman Express leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin station at 8:10 AM and arrives at Agra Cantonment at 9:50 AM — that's 100 minutes for 188 km, making it one of India's fastest trains. Book your tickets on IRCTC at least 3–4 days ahead. AC Chair Car is recommended. Note: this train does not run on Fridays.

Wake up before dawn for the Taj Mahal at sunrise — the gates open at 6 AM, and this is the magical moment when the white marble blushes pink under the first rays. Shah Jahan had it built between 1632 and 1653 in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth at 38. More than 20,000 artisans from India, Persia and Central Asia worked on it for 22 years. The white marble came from Makrana in Rajasthan (transported 300 km by elephants), and 28 types of semi-precious stones — lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, turquoise from Tibet, jade from China — make up the inlays. The dome reaches 73 metres. Note: the Taj is closed on Fridays. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the visit.
⏱ 150 minContinue to Agra Fort, 2.5 km from the Taj — another UNESCO site (1983) that too many visitors skip. Built by Emperor Akbar from 1565, this red sandstone fortress covers 38 hectares along the Yamuna River. This is where Shah Jahan spent his final eight years, imprisoned by his own son Aurangzeb — climb to the Musamman Burj tower to see what he saw: the Taj Mahal in the distance, forever out of reach. The view from this tower is one of the most heart-wrenching in all of India.
⏱ 90 minAt the end of the day, cross the Yamuna to reach Mehtab Bagh (the Moonlight Garden) — this is THE spot to photograph the Taj Mahal at sunset. This 16th-century Mughal garden offers a head-on view perfectly aligned with the mausoleum on the opposite bank. Come 45 minutes before sunset to settle in comfortably.
⏱ 60 minTry petha, Agra's signature sweet — a translucent candied fruit paste made from ash gourd, flavoured with rose or saffron. You'll find it in the shops around Sadar Bazaar. It's the quintessential edible souvenir.
⏱ 30 minIf you have time, visit a marble inlay workshop (pietra dura) — artisans here carry on the same technique used on the Taj Mahal, embedding semi-precious stones into white marble. Several workshops are located near the Taj, but beware of tourist traps: don't let touts pull you in.

Fatehpur Sikri sits 37 km from Agra — allow 45 minutes by taxi. This UNESCO-listed ghost city served as Emperor Akbar's capital for just 14 years (1571–1585) before being abandoned, most likely due to water shortages. The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence) is the tallest gateway in the world at 54 metres. Inside, the Panch Mahal is a five-storey palace built entirely of open columns — 176 pillars, each carved differently. Allow 2 hours on-site.
⏱ 120 minOn your way back to Agra, stop at Itimad-ud-Daulah, nicknamed the 'Baby Taj.' Built between 1622 and 1628, this white marble tomb is considered the rough draft for the Taj Mahal — it's the first Mughal monument built entirely in marble with semi-precious stone inlays. You'll often have the place almost to yourself, unlike its famous neighbour. Late afternoon light is ideal here.
⏱ 60 minGet ready for your Agra → Jaipur journey by train. Several direct express trains connect the two cities in 4 to 5 hours. Book in AC Chair Car on IRCTC. The line crosses the semi-arid landscapes of Rajasthan — you'll watch the scenery gradually shift from the greens of Uttar Pradesh to the ochre tones of the desert.

Amber Fort (also spelled Amer) sits perched on a hilltop 11 km from Jaipur — it was the former capital of the Kachhwaha Rajputs before Jai Singh II founded Jaipur in 1727. Construction began in 1592 under Man Singh I. Inside, the Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors) is covered in tiny convex mirrors that catch the faintest flame — in its day, a single candle was enough to light the entire room. Walk up the paved path (15 minutes) rather than taking a jeep — you'll pass Lake Maota down below. Arrive at 8 AM to beat the heat and the tour groups.
⏱ 120 minThe Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) is Rajasthan's most photographed façade — five storeys of pink sandstone pierced by 953 small honeycomb-shaped windows. Built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh, it allowed the women of the royal harem to watch street life without being seen. The façade is only one room deep — it's essentially a theatrical set piece. Climb to the top from the rear entrance to see the city through the ornate screens.
⏱ 45 minStep through the gates of the City Palace, which occupies a full seventh of the old city — built by Jai Singh II from 1727 onwards, it blends Rajput and Mughal architecture. In the Pritam Niwas courtyard, admire the four painted doorways representing the four seasons — the Peacock Gate (winter) is the most spectacular. In the museum, don't miss the world's largest pair of silver vessels (1.6 metres tall, 345 litres each), crafted to transport Ganges water to London in 1902.
⏱ 75 minRight next door, the Jantar Mantar is an open-air astronomical observatory built by Jai Singh II in 1734 — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main sundial (Samrat Yantra) stands 27 metres tall and tells the time to within 2 seconds. Jai Singh II built five such observatories across India, but the one in Jaipur is the largest and best preserved.
⏱ 45 minOn the way to Amber, make a photo stop at Jal Mahal — this palace appears to float in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. You can't go inside (access is forbidden), but the view from the shore, especially in the late afternoon with the Aravalli hills as a backdrop, is worth the detour.
⏱ 20 minStroll through the bazaars of the old city in the evening — Johari Bazaar for jewellery and gemstones, Bapu Bazaar for textiles and juttis (traditional embroidered shoes). The 'Pink City' moniker really comes alive at sunset when the façades glow.

Nahargarh Fort crowns the Aravalli hills above Jaipur — built in 1734 by Jai Singh II and expanded in 1868 by Ram Singh II. The ride up by auto-rickshaw along the winding road takes about 20 minutes. The panorama from the ramparts sweeps across the entire Pink City below. Late in the day, this is Jaipur's best sunset spot — plenty of locals come up here with their chai.
⏱ 75 minHead back down to the Albert Hall Museum, the oldest museum in Rajasthan, opened in 1887. The building itself is a jewel of Indo-Saracenic architecture designed by Samuel Swinton Jacob. Inside, the eclectic collection ranges from an Egyptian mummy to Rajput miniatures. In the evening, the illuminated façade is superb — walk past even if you don't go in.
⏱ 60 minTry Rajasthani cuisine: dal baati churma is the signature dish — balls of dough baked in embers (baati) served with spiced lentils (dal) and a dessert of crushed wheat with sugar and ghee (churma). You'll find it in restaurants throughout the old city.

Mehrangarh Fort is the monument that defines Jodhpur — it looms 125 metres above the Blue City, perched on a hill the locals call the 'Mountain of Birds.' Rao Jodha founded it in 1459, but most of what you see today dates from the 17th century under Jaswant Singh. The walls rise up to 36 metres high and are 20 metres thick in places — they were never breached. Inside, seven successive gates lead to the palaces: the Phool Mahal (Flower Palace) with its gold-covered ceiling, the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) and the Sheesh Mahal with its mirrored walls. The fort museum holds over 15,000 objects, including Akbar's sword. Allow at least 2.5 hours.
⏱ 150 minJust below the fort, the Jaswant Thada is a white marble cenotaph built in 1899 in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The marble sheets are so thin that light passes through them. It's a quiet and photogenic spot, often overlooked by hurried tourists — don't skip it.
⏱ 45 minWander into the old Blue City — the houses are painted in indigo blue, a tradition that originally belonged to Brahmins (the colour signalled their caste). Today the custom has spread across entire neighbourhoods. Lose yourself in the narrow lanes around Nai Sarak for the most photogenic façades.
⏱ 60 min
Sardar Market, at the foot of the Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar), is Jodhpur's liveliest bazaar. Spices, textiles, leather, silverware — everything is up for negotiation here. Buy some mirchi vada, a potato-stuffed chilli pepper deep-fried to perfection — a local speciality you won't find anywhere else.
⏱ 60 minAt the end of the day, get ready for your journey to Jaisalmer: the Swarn Nagari Express departs Jodhpur around 4 AM and arrives in Jaisalmer around 9 AM — roughly 5 hours for 297 km. It runs daily. Alternatively, the Runicha Express leaves in the evening (around 7:40 PM) and arrives around 1:30 AM. AC Chair or Sleeper, depending on your preference.

Jaisalmer Fort is unique in the world: it's one of the last fortresses still inhabited, home to around 3,000 people living within its golden sandstone walls. Founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, it rises 76 metres above the Thar Desert on Trikuta Hill. The golden stone has earned it the nickname 'Sonar Quila' (Golden Fort) — at sunset, the ramparts seem to melt into the sand. Inside, visit the 12th-century Jain temples, particularly the Chandraprabhu Temple with its mind-boggling stone carvings — every square centimetre of stone is intricately chiselled.
⏱ 120 minHead down to the lower town to explore the havelis — grand old mansions of fabulously wealthy merchants, carved from the same golden sandstone as the fort. Start with Patwon Ki Haveli, the largest — five adjoining buildings constructed between 1805 and 1862 by a family that traded in brocade and opium. Every balcony, every window is a lacework of stone. Then move on to Nathmal Ki Haveli, built by two brothers who each worked on one side — spot the subtle differences between the two halves; it's a fun game.
⏱ 75 minGadisar Lake, a 10-minute walk from the fort, is an artificial reservoir dug in 1367 by Maharawal Gadsi Singh. The entrance is through a carved gateway. Early in the morning, the fort's reflection in the still water is stunning. You can rent a pedal boat or simply sit on the ghats.
⏱ 40 minTake an excursion into the Thar Desert to the Sam Sand Dunes, 42 km from Jaisalmer. Operators offer late-afternoon outings to catch the sunset over the dunes — by camel or by jeep. The sight of golden dunes bathed in raking light is breathtaking. If you spend the night under a tent, the Thar's starry sky, free from light pollution, is one of the most spectacular in India. You can also return the same evening if you'd rather sleep in town.

Transit day: Jaisalmer → Udaipur is the trickiest leg of the trip. There's no direct train between the two cities. The best option is an overnight bus (roughly 10–11 hours, departing around 5–6 PM, arriving early morning) or going via Jodhpur by train (5 hours) then Jodhpur → Udaipur by car or bus (5 hours). Either way, you'll arrive in the morning. Rest at your hotel before hitting the sights in the early afternoon.
⏱ 30 minHead to the City Palace of Udaipur — the largest palace in Rajasthan, a complex stretching 244 metres long and 30 metres high, built over four centuries starting in 1559 by Udai Singh II, the city's founder. It towers over Lake Pichola from a rocky ridge. Inside, lose yourself in the maze of courtyards, balconies and chambers adorned with mirror mosaics and painted frescoes. The museum displays Rajput miniatures, weapons and royal cradles — allow at least 1.5 hours.
⏱ 90 minThe Jagdish Temple, steps away from the City Palace, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, built in 1651. Its 24-metre façade is covered in sculptures of dancers, elephants and horsemen. You'll recognise it by the statue of Garuda (Vishnu's eagle mount) guarding the entrance.
⏱ 30 minIn the late afternoon, take a boat ride on Lake Pichola — the hour-long trip circles Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas (the Lake Palace, now a luxury hotel that appears to float on the water). The lake was created in 1362 and expanded by successive maharanas. The golden evening light on the white palaces is Udaipur's crowning moment.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening, step inside Bagore Ki Haveli, an 18th-century haveli turned museum. A traditional Rajasthani dance performance takes place every evening at 7 PM in the courtyard — Ghoomar dances, puppet shows and acrobats. It's touristy but well done, and the candlelit courtyard atmosphere is charming.

The Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh) sits atop the Aravalli hills, 5 km from the centre — built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh to watch the monsoon clouds roll in, it was never completed. The winding road up passes through forested land. From the summit, the view plunges over all of Udaipur, its lakes, and hills stretching as far as the eye can see. Take an auto-rickshaw up in the morning for the best light.
⏱ 60 minSaheliyon Ki Bari (the Garden of the Maidens of Honour) is an ornamental garden built in the 18th century by Maharana Sangram Singh II for the 48 handmaidens who came as part of his queen's dowry. Fountains, lotus ponds and shaded pavilions — a peaceful haven away from the bustle of the markets.
⏱ 40 minTake a walk around Fateh Sagar Lake, Udaipur's second lake — a pleasant stroll along the banks. Boats shuttle visitors to Nehru Park, a small garden island in the middle of the lake.
⏱ 45 minVisit Shilpgram, a reconstructed artisan village 3 km from Fateh Sagar — 26 traditional huts representing the architectural styles of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra. Artisans work live on-site: pottery, weaving, wood carving. It's a good place to buy genuine handicrafts at fair prices.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening, organise your departure to Mumbai. The Mewar Express (train 12964) leaves Udaipur City at 6:15 PM bound for Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) — but for Mumbai, an overnight bus or a domestic flight (1h15) is a better bet. Another option: a train from Udaipur → Ahmedabad (6–7h) then Ahmedabad → Mumbai (6–7h), but that's a long haul. The flight is recommended if your budget allows.

Arrival in Mumbai — if you took the flight from Udaipur, you'll land at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in 1h15. Head to Colaba, the historic district at the southern tip. Start with the Gateway of India, a yellow basalt arch standing 26 metres tall, built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911. This is also the gate through which the last British troops left India in February 1948. Facing it, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (1903) displays its Indo-Saracenic façade — you can step inside for tea even if you're not a guest.
⏱ 60 minDon't leave Mumbai without seeing Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST, formerly Victoria Terminus), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Built between 1878 and 1888 by architect Frederick William Stevens, it's an exuberant blend of Victorian Gothic and Indian elements — turrets, stained glass, gargoyles and a central dome. Step inside to see the main hall with its monumental staircase. Come back at night to admire the illuminated façade — with 3 million commuters daily, it's India's busiest station, and the human spectacle is every bit as impressive as the architecture.
⏱ 45 minMarine Drive is a crescent-shaped boulevard stretching 3.6 km along the Arabian Sea — Mumbaikars call it the 'Queen's Necklace' because the streetlights trace a luminous string of pearls at night. Come in the late afternoon: families settle along the concrete parapet facing the sea, bhel puri vendors (puffed rice snack) make their rounds, and the sunset over the ocean is Mumbai's free daily show.
⏱ 45 min
Explore Colaba Causeway, Mumbai's most cosmopolitan shopping street — art galleries, second-hand bookshops and street food stalls line the road. Stop at Café Leopold, open since 1871, which was hit during the 2008 attacks — bullet holes are still visible on the walls, deliberately left as a memorial.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening, walk to Chowpatty Beach at the end of Marine Drive. It's not a swimming beach (the water isn't clean), but it's where Mumbaikars come to eat pav bhaji and pani puri after dark. The atmosphere is that of a permanent funfair.

Take the ferry to the Elephanta Caves — it departs from the Gateway of India for a 1-hour crossing across Mumbai harbour. These UNESCO-listed caves (1987) are carved into the basalt rock of Elephanta Island and date from the 5th to 8th centuries. The main cave houses a 6-metre-tall Trimurti of Shiva — three sculpted faces representing creation, preservation and destruction. It's one of India's most celebrated sculptures. Note: the caves are closed on Mondays. Allow 3 hours round trip including the visit.
⏱ 180 minBack in the city, swing by Dhobi Ghat — the world's largest open-air laundry. For over 150 years, dhobis (washermen) have been scrubbing Mumbai's laundry in stone basins arranged in rows. The sight is best from the Mahalaxmi bridge — hundreds of concrete bays splashed with colour from the drying clothes. Early morning is when the activity peaks.
⏱ 30 minIf you're curious and respectful, a guided tour of Dharavi opens the doors to Asia's largest slum — but also to an economic ecosystem that generates roughly $1 billion a year. Local operators run 2-hour walking tours through recycling workshops, pottery studios and textile units. Photography is forbidden in residential areas — and rightly so.
⏱ 120 minGet ready for your Mumbai → Aurangabad journey: the Janshatabdi Express departs Mumbai CST around 12:10 PM and arrives in Aurangabad around 6:20 PM — roughly 6 hours for 370 km. It's a daily train with AC Chair Car, comfortable for a daytime ride. The Vande Bharat Express is even faster (~5h45). Book on IRCTC in advance.

Bibi Ka Maqbara is the first thing to see in Aurangabad — nicknamed the 'Taj Mahal of the Deccan,' this mausoleum was built in 1660 by Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother Dilras Banu Begum, wife of Aurangzeb. The resemblance to the Taj is striking, but look closer: only the lower portion is actual marble — the rest is painted stucco, because Aurangzeb's budget didn't match Shah Jahan's. The comparison between the two monuments tells the story of the Mughal Empire's decline all by itself.
⏱ 60 minDaulatabad Fort stands 15 km from Aurangabad on a conical rocky outcrop rising 200 metres — it's one of the most impregnable forts in India. Founded in the 12th century, it was renamed by Sultan Mohammed bin Tughluq, who had the mad idea of relocating Delhi's entire population here in 1327 (he ended up sending them back two years later, after thousands had died on the march). The climb passes through a pitch-black spiral tunnel — defenders could light fires inside to smoke out attackers. Bring sturdy shoes and a torch.
⏱ 90 minOn the way down, stop at the Panchakki (water mill) — an ingenious 17th-century hydraulic system that channelled water from a spring 6 km away to power a mill and irrigate the gardens of a Sufi saint. The shaded garden with its pool is a welcome oasis after the climb to the fort.
⏱ 30 minVisit the Aurangabad Caves — often overlooked in favour of Ajanta and Ellora, these 12 Buddhist caves from the 6th–7th centuries are just 3 km from the city centre. Cave 7 contains female sculptures of a refinement comparable to those at Ajanta. You'll likely have the place to yourself — a welcome contrast to the packed UNESCO sites.
⏱ 60 minPlan your Ajanta day tomorrow: the caves are 100 km from Aurangabad (about 2.5 hours by road). They are CLOSED ON MONDAYS — check your day. Plan to leave early (6–7 AM) to enjoy the site before the heat and the crowds.

The Ajanta Caves are the crown jewel of this entire trip — 30 Buddhist caves carved into a horseshoe-shaped basalt cliff above the Waghora River, UNESCO-listed since 1983. The oldest date back to the 2nd century BC, the most recent to the 5th century AD. It was a British officer, John Smith, who 'rediscovered' them in 1819 during a tiger hunt — they had been swallowed by jungle for 1,300 years. He carved his name into a wall in Cave 10 (you can still see it).
⏱ 60 minCave 1 is the masterpiece — a 5th-century monastery (vihara) whose walls are covered in murals that rank among the finest in the world. The Bodhisattva Padmapani, with his melancholy face and lotus flower, has become the iconic image of ancient Indian art. The pigments — red ochre, lapis lazuli, green malachite — retain an astonishing luminosity after 1,500 years. Take the time to sit and let your eyes adjust to the dim light — the details emerge gradually.
⏱ 45 minDon't leave without seeing Cave 26 — it houses a 7-metre-long reclining Buddha carved from the rock, the scene of the Mahaparinirvana (passage to nirvana). Above it, narrative panels recount the Buddha's previous lives (Jataka tales). Also stop by Cave 19, a prayer hall (chaitya) whose sculpted façade with its horseshoe arch is among the most elaborate on the site.
⏱ 45 minCaves 9 and 10 are the oldest (2nd–1st century BC) — simple prayer halls with a central stupa. The paintings here are more fragmentary but rank among the oldest surviving Buddhist paintings in the world. Allow 3 to 4 hours in total to do the site properly. Buy a torch or use your phone — natural lighting is practically non-existent in some caves.
⏱ 45 min
The Aurangabad → Ajanta journey (100 km) is done by taxi or MSRTC bus. The road crosses the Deccan Plateau — a landscape of red earth and cotton fields. On the way back, if you have time, make a stop at the viewpoint at the top of the cliff overlooking the horseshoe — the bird's-eye view of the entire cave complex and the Waghora gorge is spectacular.

Ellora is 30 km from Aurangabad — far more accessible than Ajanta. The 34 caves (UNESCO-listed since 1983) span three religions: 12 Buddhist (5th–7th century), 17 Hindu (6th–9th century) and 5 Jain (9th–10th century). It's the only site in the world where three religious traditions coexist within the same rock-cut complex. NOTE: Ellora is CLOSED ON TUESDAYS.
⏱ 30 minThe Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) is the centrepiece — and quite possibly the most staggering monument in all of India. This Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva was carved TOP-DOWN from the living rock, removing an estimated 200,000 tonnes of basalt. Begun under Rashtrakuta king Krishna I in the 8th century, it stands 33 metres tall and covers twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens. Every surface is sculpted — life-sized elephants, scenes from the Ramayana, deities. You'll have a hard time believing the whole thing was hewn from a single block of rock. Allow at least 1.5 hours for Kailasa alone.
⏱ 120 minNext, explore the Buddhist caves (Caves 1 to 12) — vast multi-storey monasteries carved from basalt. Stop at Cave 10 (Vishvakarma, or the 'Carpenter's Cave'): a prayer hall with a vaulted ceiling that imitates wooden beams — except everything is carved from stone. A 3-metre-tall Buddha sits before the stupa.
⏱ 45 minThe Jain caves (30 to 34) are smaller but extraordinarily refined. Cave 32 (Indra Sabha) has an upper storey with a sculpted elephant and ceilings painted with lotus flowers. They're often ignored by visitors in a rush — you'll have the site to yourself.
⏱ 45 minGet ready for your Aurangabad → Goa journey. There's no direct train between the two cities — the most practical option is a domestic flight (about 1h30 with a layover, or overnight bus ~12h via Pune). Aurangabad airport serves Goa via Mumbai or directly depending on the season. Book the flight in advance if possible; otherwise, the overnight MSRTC or private bus is a decent but long alternative.

Old Goa, 10 km from Panaji, is the historic heart of Portuguese colonisation — the 'Rome of the East' in the 16th century. The Basilica of Bom Jesus (1605), UNESCO-listed, houses the body of Saint Francis Xavier in a silver coffin. The Jesuit missionary died in 1552, but his body is said to be 'incorrupt' — it's publicly displayed every ten years (last time in 2024). The Baroque interior is restrained compared to the façades, but the gilded altarpiece is striking.
⏱ 60 minJust across the way, the Sé Cathedral is the largest church in Asia — 76 metres long, built between 1562 and 1640. It has only one tower (the second collapsed in 1776 and was never rebuilt). Inside, the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is lavished in gold. Allow 30 minutes for both churches together.
⏱ 45 minIn the afternoon, head south to the beaches — Palolem is a crescent-shaped cove fringed with coconut palms, bookended by rocky headlands at each end. The water is calm, ideal for swimming. It's Goa's most photogenic beach, but also the busiest in peak season. If you're after more peace and quiet, continue to Agonda, 5 km further north — same scenery, fewer people.
⏱ 90 min
Taste Goan cuisine — a unique blend of Indian and Portuguese influences. Vindaloo (pork marinated in vinegar and spices) and xacuti (chicken with coconut and spices) are the signature dishes. Pair them with feni, the local spirit distilled from cashew nuts or coconut palm sap.
⏱ 60 minSunset on the beach — it's a ritual in Goa. Beach shacks serve grilled fish with your feet in the sand as the sun plunges into the Arabian Sea. A simple, perfect moment.

Panaji (Panjim), Goa's capital, has a hidden Latin Quarter: Fontainhas. This tangle of narrow streets lined with houses painted yellow, blue and ochre is the last vestige of the old Portuguese district. The wrought-iron balconies, azulejos (decorative tiles) and corner chapels could easily teleport you to Lisbon. Allow an hour to wander with camera in hand.
⏱ 60 minChapora Fort, made famous by Indian cinema, offers a 360° panorama over the coastline — Vagator beach below and the mouth of the Chapora River. The red laterite walls stand out sharply against the sky. Only ruins remain (the fort dates to 1717), but it's the viewpoint, not the architecture, that makes this place. Climb up in the late afternoon for the best light.
⏱ 45 minIf you're here on a Friday, don't miss the Mapusa Market — the most authentic in Goa. Spices, chouriço sausages, tropical fruits, dried fish and local handicrafts. It's loud, colourful and thoroughly local.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening, prepare for the Goa → Kochi leg: the Netravati Express (16345) departs Madgaon around 10:40 PM and arrives at Ernakulam Junction the next day around 12:20 PM — roughly 14 hours overnight. This is the famous Konkan Railway, one of the most beautiful train lines in the world: the track hugs the west coast, crossing 2,000 bridges and 92 tunnels between mountains and sea. Book an AC2 sleeper for a comfortable night. The Mangala Lakshadweep Express is another daily option. Reserve 4–5 days ahead on IRCTC.

Arrival at Ernakulam Junction by late morning — take a local ferry (10 minutes) to reach Fort Kochi, the historic quarter. The Chinese fishing nets (cheena vala) are the first thing you'll see: these large cantilever structures have been in use since the 14th century, brought by merchants from the court of Kublai Khan. Fishermen still operate them by hand at sunrise and sunset — watch them work, and you can buy their catch on the spot.
⏱ 45 minWalk to St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India — built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscans. Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1524 before his remains were repatriated to Lisbon 14 years later. Look at the tombstones on the floor — they chronicle three centuries of colonial rule, from Portuguese to Dutch to British.
⏱ 30 minContinue to Jew Town in Mattancherry — the Paradesi Synagogue (1568) is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth. Look down: the floor is paved with blue-and-white Chinese porcelain tiles imported in the 18th century, each one different. Kochi's once-thriving Jewish community now numbers just a handful of members — push through the door while it's still open.
⏱ 30 minRight next door, visit the Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace), built by the Portuguese in 1555 for the Raja of Kochi, then renovated by the Dutch in 1663. Don't miss the murals in the interior temple — they depict episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata with remarkable realism and vivid colours. In the coronation hall, you'll see portraits of the Rajas of Kochi spanning several centuries.
⏱ 45 min
Stroll along Princess Street and the lanes of Fort Kochi — art galleries, cafés, antique shops and street art coexist in restored colonial buildings. If the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is running (December to March in even years), contemporary art installations take over warehouses and historic buildings across the neighbourhood.
⏱ 60 minDinner of fresh seafood — Fort Kochi restaurants serve karimeen (Kerala's pearl spot fish) grilled in a banana leaf, meen moilee (fish in coconut curry) and masala prawns. Kerala is India's seafood paradise.

Local train from Ernakulam → Alleppey (Alappuzha): about 1h30 for 55 km, several departures daily. Alleppey is the gateway to the Kerala backwaters — a 900-km network of canals, lagoons and lakes fringed with coconut palms and rice paddies. This is the signature landscape of Kerala.
⏱ 20 minTake a walk along Alappuzha Beach in the late afternoon — the old lighthouse (1862) marks the start of the promenade. Less touristy than the backwaters, this is where locals come at dusk.
⏱ 30 minEmbark on a full day on the backwaters aboard a houseboat (kettuvallam) — these traditional barges made of wood and coir (coconut fibre) glide silently through the rice paddies of Kuttanad, the only farming area in India that sits below sea level. The boat comes with a bedroom, a cook and a pilot. Lunch is prepared on board with fresh fish from the lake and local vegetables. Book a boat for the day (8 AM–5 PM) or overnight if you want to sleep on the water.
⏱ 360 minIf you prefer a less touristy experience, take a public ferry between Alleppey and Kottayam — 3 hours of cruising through the same canals at a fraction of the price, with locals hopping on and off at every stop. It's the most photogenic 'public transport' in India.

Drive from Alleppey → Munnar (~4h30, 175 km). Munnar has NO railway station — this is one of the few legs of the trip that must be done by road. The climb from the Kerala lowlands to 1,600 metres is spectacular: you'll pass from rice paddies to rubber plantations, then spice fields (cardamom, pepper), and finally the rolling green carpets of tea estates. Stop at the viewpoints along the way — Cheeyappara Falls is a roadside waterfall worth 15 minutes.
⏱ 30 minWalk between the rows of tea bushes that blanket the hills as far as the eye can see — green undulating waves that look like a miniature landscape. Tea has been grown here since the 1880s, introduced by the British. You'll pass women in colourful saris who still pick by hand, baskets on their backs. The morning light rakes across the leaves and creates stunning geometric shadows — that's the ideal time for photos.
⏱ 60 minMattupetty Dam is a reservoir 13 km from Munnar — the artificial lake is surrounded by shola forests (tropical montane forest). You'll likely spot Nilgiri Tahr (endemic mountain goats) on the slopes. The road there passes through pastoral scenery with cows from the Indo-Swiss breed, raised at an experimental farm established in 1902.
⏱ 45 min
Visit a tea factory to understand the production process — from withering to rolling, oxidation to drying. Factories offer guided tours of 30–45 minutes followed by a tasting. You'll leave with fresh tea that's far better and cheaper than what you'd find in town.
⏱ 60 minIf you have time, drive up to Top Station (32 km from Munnar) — the highest point on the Munnar–Kodaikanal road at 1,880 metres. On a clear day, the views stretch over the plains of Tamil Nadu. It's also the only place in India where Neelakurinji grows, a flower that blooms just once every 12 years (next bloom in 2030).

Eravikulam National Park (15 km from Munnar) protects the world's largest population of Nilgiri Tahr — around 800 individuals of this mountain goat endemic to the Western Ghats. The park covers 97 sq km of highland grasslands and shola forests. Entry is by shuttle from the checkpoint — private vehicles are not allowed in. The walk along the main trail (3 km round trip) offers open views of Anamudi Peak, the highest summit in South India at 2,695 metres.
⏱ 120 minOn the way back, stop at Lakkam Waterfalls — a forest waterfall reached by a short 15-minute walk from the road. Less touristy than Attukal Falls, you'll likely be alone with the sound of the water.
⏱ 30 minHike through the hills around Munnar — several trails wind through tea plantations and forests. The trek to Kolukkumalai Tea Estate (the highest tea plantation in the world at 2,400 m) is an option for the more adventurous — 4x4 plus a hike, sunrise at the summit. Otherwise, shorter walks of 2–3 hours around Chinnakanal or Suryanelli are accessible to everyone.
⏱ 150 minIn the evening, prepare your Munnar → Madurai journey: about 4.5 hours by road (160 km) along winding mountain roads. There is NO train from Munnar — it's road only. KSRTC buses and shared taxis run daily. Leave early the next morning to reach Madurai by late morning.

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is arguably the most spectacular temple in all of South India — and the one monument that justifies the detour to Madurai on its own. Its 14 gopurams (gateway towers) soar up to 52 metres high and are covered in thousands of brightly painted sculptures — gods, goddesses, demons, mythical creatures. The current temple dates from the 17th century under the Nayak dynasty, but a sanctuary has stood here for at least 2,000 years. Inside, 33,000 sculptures adorn the corridors. The sacred Golden Lotus Tank (Potramarai Kulam) sits at the heart of the complex. Visit early in the morning (opens at 5 AM) or in the evening — the ceremony of putting Shiva and Meenakshi to bed around 9 PM is an intense experience. Note: no shoes or shorts, and non-Hindus do not have access to the inner sanctum.
⏱ 120 minAfter the temple, pop over to the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, a 17th-century palace built by King Thirumalai Nayak in 1636. Only a quarter of the original building survives (the king's grandson dismantled the rest to build a new palace in Trichy), but step into the main hall: its massive 12-metre-high columns give you a sense of past grandeur. A sound and light show takes place in the evening.
⏱ 45 min
The Madurai flower market, right beside the Meenakshi Temple, is a festival of colours and fragrances — mountains of jasmine (Madurai's flower), roses and marigolds pile up in baskets. Tamil women wear jasmine garlands in their hair, and the flowers serve as temple offerings. Come early morning when the deliveries arrive.
⏱ 30 minThe Gandhi Memorial Museum, housed in the former Rani Mangammal Palace, traces the Mahatma's life. The most moving exhibit is the bloodstained dhoti Gandhi was wearing when he was assassinated on January 30, 1948. The museum is well curated and free.
⏱ 45 minGet ready for your Madurai → Rameswaram journey: express trains connect the two cities in 3–4 hours for 170 km. The highlight of the ride is the Pamban Bridge — India's second-longest rail bridge (2.06 km), built in 1914, which crosses the sea on stilts to link Rameswaram Island to the mainland. The train literally runs above the ocean. Grab a window seat.

The train ride from Madurai → Rameswaram (170 km, 3–4h) is an attraction in itself. The showstopper: Pamban Bridge, India's first sea bridge, built in 1914, stretching 2.2 km across the Palk Strait. A new bridge was inaugurated in 2025 with a vertical-lift mechanism — the train rolls literally above the Indian Ocean. Grab a window seat and keep your camera ready.
⏱ 30 minBrace yourself for the Ramanathaswamy Temple — one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism, one of the four Char Dham. Dedicated to Shiva in the form of a lingam, legend has it that Rama himself erected it upon his return from Lanka. What will strike you first are the corridors: the third is the longest in any Hindu temple in India, lined with 1,212 sculpted pillars. Inside, 22 sacred wells are used for ritual ablutions — pilgrims are doused with water from each well in succession. Watch, breathe, let yourself be carried by the intensity of the place.
⏱ 90 minPush on to Dhanushkodi, at the extreme southeastern tip of the island — 18 km along a strip of sand between two seas. It's a ghost town: a devastating cyclone wiped it off the map in 1964, killing around 1,800 people including passengers on a train. You'll see the ruins of the church, the school and the railway tracks swallowed by sand. On a clear day, Sri Lanka is visible just 30 km away. The place is raw and desolate.
⏱ 90 minRitual bathing at Agni Theertham, the sacred beach right in front of the temple. Pilgrims immerse themselves here before entering the temple — you can do the same. The water is warm and shallow. At sunrise, the colours are exceptional.

The Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur is the absolute masterpiece of Dravidian architecture — UNESCO-listed since 1987. Built by Chola king Rajaraja I between 1003 and 1010, it was completed in just 7 years, a remarkable feat for a monument of this scale. The vimana (sanctuary tower) soars to 66 metres — the tallest of any temple in India. At its apex sits an 80-tonne granite capstone. How the Cholas hoisted such a weight to that height in the 11th century remains debated; one theory suggests they built a 6-km ramp. The monolithic Nandi (sacred bull) at the entrance weighs 25 tonnes. Allow at least 1.5 hours to explore the temple and its complex.
⏱ 90 minA few hundred metres from the temple, head to the Royal Palace of Thanjavur — a Nayak and Maratha complex (16th–19th century). Climb the watchtower (Tharasura Gopuram) for a fine view over the city. Inside, don't miss the Chola bronze gallery — its Shiva Nataraja statues (the cosmic dancer) are among the finest in the world.
⏱ 60 minIf you're curious, step into the Saraswathi Mahal Library within the palace grounds — one of the oldest in Asia, founded in the 16th century by the Nayaks. It holds over 60,000 manuscripts on palm leaves in Tamil, Sanskrit and Marathi. The adjacent museum displays botanical and medical illustrations four centuries old — a hidden treasure.
⏱ 40 min
Thanjavur is also the birthplace of Tanjore painting — a style of painting on wood with gold-leaf relief and semi-precious stone inlays, depicting Hindu deities. You'll find workshops in the neighbourhood around the temple where artisans still work using traditional techniques.

Train from Thanjavur → Puducherry via Trichy (~4–5h with a connection). Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) is India's old French outpost — handed over by France in 1954. The French Quarter (Ville Blanche) is a grid of quiet streets lined with mustard-yellow colonial houses, bougainvillea spilling from balconies and street signs in French. Rue Suffren, Rue Dumas, Rue Romain Rolland — you could almost forget you're in India. Except the sacred cows haven't read the street names.
⏱ 75 minWalk down to Promenade Beach, which runs 1.5 km along the Bay of Bengal — an esplanade flanked by colonial buildings, a Gandhi statue and the French war memorial. Cars are banned in the morning and evening, making for a pleasant stroll. At the northern end, spot the old lighthouse and Bharathi Park.
⏱ 45 minTake an excursion to Auroville, 12 km from Puducherry — a 'universal city' founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa ('The Mother'), the spiritual companion of Sri Aurobindo. The Matrimandir, a golden sphere 29 metres in diameter at the community's centre, is the iconic image of the place. Visiting the Matrimandir requires advance booking — without it, you'll only see the outer gardens. Around 3,000 people of 60 nationalities live in Auroville.
⏱ 120 minDinner in the Tamil Quarter (Ville Noire) for a striking contrast with the French side — dosa and idli in the morning, chettinad at lunch, and French crêpes in the evening. Puducherry is the only city in India where you can switch between a café au lait and a filter coffee without crossing a border.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, in the heart of the French Quarter, is the spiritual centre around which Puducherry has built its identity since the 1920s. Sri Aurobindo, philosopher and independence activist, settled here in 1910 to escape the British police. The ashram now occupies several buildings — the samadhi (tomb) of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, covered in flowers, sits at the centre of a silent courtyard. Admission is free and open to all, but silence is expected.
⏱ 40 minParadise Beach (Playa Paraiso), reachable only by boat from Chunnambar Boat House (15-minute ride through the backwaters), is a strip of sand between the river and the sea. Wilder than Promenade Beach, it's fringed with casuarina trees and nearly deserted on weekdays.
⏱ 90 min
Rent a bicycle and explore the French Quarter and its surroundings — it's the best way to get around Puducherry. The streets are flat and distances short. Swing by Goubert Market (near the beach) for tropical fruits and flowers.
⏱ 60 minGet ready for your Puducherry → Chennai journey: trains connect the two cities in about 3.5 hours for 150 km. The Villupuram–Chennai Express is a daily option. You can also take an air-conditioned Volvo bus (3 hours direct). Book on IRCTC.

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore is Chennai's most important Dravidian temple — dedicated to Shiva, it dates from the 7th century (rebuilt in the 16th). Its 37-metre gopuram covered in brightly painted deities towers over the city's oldest neighbourhood. Come in the morning — pilgrims in white dhotis circle the temple clockwise, and flower sellers occupy every nook.
⏱ 45 minFort St George, built by the British East India Company in 1644, is the first English fort in India. It now serves as the seat of the Tamil Nadu government. The museum inside displays weapons, uniforms and letters from the colonial era — including correspondence from Robert Clive. St. Mary's Church (1680) within the compound is the oldest Anglican church east of Suez.
⏱ 60 minMarina Beach stretches for 13 km — it's the second-longest urban beach in the world. Swimming is inadvisable (strong currents), but the late-afternoon promenade is a spectacle: sundal vendors (spiced chickpeas), kites, families out for a stroll, cricket games. At the southern end, the neo-Gothic San Thome Cathedral (1896) is said to be built over the tomb of the Apostle Thomas.
⏱ 60 minExplore Mylapore on foot — Chennai's oldest and liveliest neighbourhood. Around the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, the lanes are packed with Kanchipuram silk sari shops, jewellery stores, and small restaurants serving the best filter coffee in the city.
⏱ 60 minPrepare the Chennai → Varanasi leg. WARNING: this is the longest journey of the trip — roughly 22 hours by train (1,600 km). A domestic flight (2.5 hours, several carriers) is strongly recommended to avoid losing two travel days. If you're set on the train, the Chennai–Varanasi Express exists, but it's an endurance test. Book the flight well in advance.

Varanasi is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world — at least 3,000 years old. Mark Twain described it as 'older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend.' It's Shiva's sacred city, and for Hindus, dying here brings liberation from the cycle of reincarnation. Head down to the ghats (stone steps leading to the Ganges) at sunrise — the golden light, the mist on the river and the morning rituals compose a scene you won't forget.
⏱ 30 minTake a boat on the Ganges at sunrise — this is THE moment in Varanasi. From the river, you'll watch the 84 ghats slip past: pilgrims bathing, yogis meditating, washermen beating laundry, and the funeral pyres at Manikarnika Ghat that have burned around the clock for millennia. Boatmen offer rides of 1 to 1.5 hours. Negotiate the fare before boarding.
⏱ 90 minDashashwamedh Ghat is the main ghat — every evening around 7 PM, the Ganga Aarti ceremony draws thousands. Seven priests in saffron robes perform a choreographed ritual with five-tiered oil lamps facing the Ganges, accompanied by chanting and bells. It's the most intense moment of the day. Arrive 30 minutes early to find a seat on the steps — or watch from a boat anchored in front of the ghat.
⏱ 60 min
Lose yourself in the galis (alleyways) of the old city — a labyrinth so dense that even Google Maps gives up. Passages barely 60 cm wide, tiny temples at every corner, cows blocking the way, lassi and paan sellers. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple (the Golden Lingam), Varanasi's holiest shrine, hides within this maze — recently renovated with a vast open corridor (Kashi Vishwanath Corridor). Non-Hindus: access to the inner sanctum is restricted — check current rules.

Sarnath is 10 km from Varanasi — this is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after his Enlightenment, to five disciples, roughly 2,500 years ago. The Dhamek Stupa, a stone-and-brick cylinder 43 metres tall and 28 metres across, marks the exact spot. Built in the 5th century under Emperor Ashoka (and later enlarged), it's covered in sculpted geometric and floral patterns. The Sarnath Archaeological Museum houses the Ashoka Lion Capital — the national emblem of India that you see on every banknote and passport. Allow 2 hours for Sarnath.
⏱ 120 minBack in Varanasi, head to Assi Ghat — the southernmost ghat, quieter and more bohemian than Dashashwamedh. It's the neighbourhood of students (Banaras Hindu University is just behind) and long-stay travellers. In the morning, a small aarti ceremony takes place beneath a sacred fig tree.
⏱ 40 minAttend a concert of Indian classical music — Varanasi is the capital of the sitar and tabla. Performances take place almost every evening in ashrams or cultural centres around the ghats. Ask your accommodation — the best concerts aren't advertised.
⏱ 90 minIn the evening, prepare your return to Delhi. The Vande Bharat Express (India's most modern train) connects Varanasi to New Delhi in about 8 hours — it's the most comfortable ride on the network. Early morning departure, early afternoon arrival. AC Chair Car with meals included. Alternatively, several overnight trains make the journey in 12–13 hours with AC2/AC3 sleeper berths. Book on IRCTC 4–5 days ahead.
