Mumbai → Lonavala → Pune → Aurangabad → Nashik
From the Gateway of India to Ajanta's millennia-old paintings, this 12 days circuit plunges into the heart of Maharashtra: the frenzy of Mumbai the megacity, Karla's 2,000-year-old Buddhist caves, Pune's Maratha palaces, Aurangabad's Taj of the Deccan, the UNESCO masterpieces of Ajanta and Ellora—including the Kailasa Temple, carved top-down from 200,000 tons of basalt—Nashik's sacred ghats and surprising vineyards. A journey between urban chaos, cave silence, and the splendor of Indian rock-cut art.

You land in Mumbai, and the sensory assault begins the moment you step out of the airport: humid heat, honking horns, the scent of jasmine mingling with exhaust fumes. Grab a taxi or Uber to Colaba or Fort, the historic heart of South Mumbai. Settle in and brace yourself—this city of 20 million doesn't do anything by halves.
⏱ 90 minStart at the Gateway of India, the monumental yellow basalt arch that rises 26 meters above the waterfront. Completed in 1924 by Scottish architect George Wittet, it was built to commemorate King George V's 1911 visit—except the king only saw a cardboard model, as construction hadn't yet begun. History's irony: the last official act of the British Empire in India played out here on February 28, 1948, when the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry marched through this arch for the final time, with a 21-gun salute. Directly opposite stands the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, opened December 16, 1903 by industrialist Jamsetji Tata—India's first luxury hotel, which actually predated the Gateway by two decades.
⏱ 45 minWalk north to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), formerly Victoria Terminus—the most spectacular train station you'll ever see. A UNESCO site, it was designed by architect Frederick William Stevens in Victorian neo-Gothic style blended with Indian and Islamic elements, completed in 1888 after ten years of construction. Over 3 million passengers pass through daily—making it one of the world's busiest rail hubs. Look up: turrets, stained glass, gargoyles, an octagonal dome crowned by an allegorical statue of Progress holding a torch. You might recognize it—this is where Slumdog Millionaire ends.
⏱ 45 minA stone's throw from CST, push on to Crawford Market (officially Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai), a Victorian market completed in 1869. The white marble bas-reliefs at the entrance, depicting scenes of rural Indian life, are the work of John Lockwood Kipling—father of Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book. Inside, it's an assault of colors and smells: pyramids of Alphonso mangoes in season, mountains of turmeric, Kashmiri saffron, loose spices. Arrive before 10 AM for the raw energy of the market in full swing.
⏱ 60 minEnd the day with a sunset stroll along Marine Drive—3 km of seafront curve facing the Arabian Sea, nicknamed the "Queen's Necklace" when the streetlights illuminate at night. The Art Deco buildings from the 1930s-40s lining the promenade form one of the world's largest concentrations of Art Deco architecture, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What makes this district unique is that these buildings were designed by Indian architects—the first major architectural movement led by Indians during the colonial period. Sit on the concrete parapet with the Mumbaikars, buy bhel puri from a street vendor, and watch the sun plunge into the Arabian Sea.

Catch the first ferry from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves (about 1 hour crossing). The island houses rock-cut temples carved into basalt between the 5th and 7th centuries, UNESCO-listed since 1987. The centerpiece is the Trimurti Sadashiva—a three-faced Shiva over 6 meters tall, representing the Creator, Protector, and Destroyer. It's one of India's largest rock-cut sculptures, and the finesse of the expressions—serenity in the central face, feminine gentleness on the right, ferocity of Bhairava on the left—stops you in your tracks. The Portuguese, who used the sculptures for target practice in the 17th century, caused considerable damage, but what remains is magnificent. NOTE: Closed Mondays. Allow 3 to 4 hours for the complete visit.
⏱ 240 minBack in Mumbai, stop at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry, in operation for over 120 years. From the pedestrian bridge at Mahalaxmi station, you'll see hundreds of washermen beating clothes in concrete troughs stretching as far as the eye can see—a hypnotic spectacle and a stark reminder that in this city of billionaires, manual labor still reigns.
⏱ 30 minNext, visit Mani Bhavan, the house where Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1934 during his Mumbai stays. It was from here that he launched the non-cooperation and civil disobedience movements that changed India's history. The house-museum, preserved in its original state, contains a library of 20,000 volumes, Gandhi's handwritten letters, and period photographs. The atmosphere is sober and contemplative—a striking contrast with the chaos of the street just below.
⏱ 45 minIf you're an early riser and brave, wake at 5 AM for Sassoon Docks—Mumbai's oldest and largest wholesale fish market, founded in 1875. The Koli, the fishermen who are Mumbai's original inhabitants (the name "Mumbai" comes from Mumbadevi, their goddess), unload the day's catch in a frenzy of shouts, crushed ice, and silvery fish. On the warehouse walls, the St+art Foundation has painted giant murals that transform this raw workplace into an open-air art gallery.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening, explore the Colaba Causeway district—a commercial artery lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Dine at one of the city's historic Iranian restaurants, like Leopold Café (open since 1871) or Café Mondegar with its walls painted by caricaturist Mario Miranda. Mumbai's street food is legendary—try a vada pav (Mumbai's "burger"), pav bhaji, or masala dosa from the stalls at Chowpatty Beach.

Start with Haji Ali Dargah, a 15th-century mosque-mausoleum perched on a rocky islet in the Arabian Sea, connected to the mainland by a 500-meter causeway that vanishes underwater at high tide. The shrine is dedicated to merchant Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who reputedly abandoned everything after a pilgrimage to Mecca. The atmosphere is powerful: the sea wind, waves licking the causeway, Sufi chants echoing under the white marble dome. Check tide times before going—if the causeway is submerged, you won't be able to access it.
⏱ 60 minHead next to the CSMVS (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, formerly Prince of Wales Museum), an Indo-Saracenic building from 1922 designed by George Wittet—the same architect as the Gateway of India. The collections span 5,000 years of Indian art: Mughal miniatures of extraordinary finesse, Gandhara sculptures (the Greco-Buddhist art of northwest India), weapons, textiles, and archaeological pieces from the Indus Valley Civilization. The palm garden surrounding the museum is a peaceful haven amid the city's din. Allow a good 2 hours.
⏱ 120 minIn the afternoon, venture to Kanheri Caves, in Sanjay Gandhi National Park—104 km² of tropical forest right in Mumbai, an improbable green lung in this megacity. The 109 Buddhist caves, carved from the 1st century BC to the 10th century AD, form one of India's largest rock-cut monastic complexes. Cave 3, called the Great Chaitya, is a 25-meter-long prayer hall with carved pillars and a central stupa. The journey from South Mumbai takes about 1.5 hours—plan a half-day for the round trip and visit.
⏱ 180 min
Returning from Kanheri, if time permits, make a detour through Bandra—Mumbai's "Brooklyn." The Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the 5.6 km cable-stayed bridge spanning the bay, offers spectacular views of Mumbai's skyline. The neighborhood teems with trendy cafés, galleries, and restaurants. The Bandstand Promenade at sunset is a classic.

Leave Mumbai via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway (115 km, 2.5 hours) heading to Lonavala, a hill station perched in the Western Ghats. The road snakes through tunnels and verdant valleys—during monsoon, waterfalls gush everywhere, but in the dry season the landscape is more arid.
⏱ 150 minYour first stop: Karla Caves, which house India's largest rock-cut Buddhist chaitya (prayer hall). Built between the 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD, this hall measures 45 meters long and 14 meters high—an underground cathedral carved from basalt. What strikes you first are the teak wood ribs on the ceiling: most are original, still in place after more than 2,000 years. The 37 octagonal pillars are topped with sculptures of couples riding elephants—a liveliness and naturalism that makes you forget their age. Count on 350 steps to climb from the base of the hill.
⏱ 120 minEight kilometers from Karla, Bhaja Caves are a complex of 22 Buddhist caves from the 2nd century BC, contemporary with Karla but far less crowded. You'll find stupas, remarkable narrative sculptures, and an atmosphere of contemplative solitude that Karla has lost to tourism. Access requires about 200 steps on a rocky path—the views across the valley from the top are worth the effort.
⏱ 90 minLate in the day, enjoy Lonavala—the town itself isn't exceptional, but the fresh Ghats air and views from viewpoints like Tiger's Leap or Rajmachi Point are welcome after Mumbai's heat. Taste chikki, the local specialty—a crunchy treat made from jaggery (unrefined cane sugar) and peanuts, sold everywhere in town.

The drive from Lonavala to Pune is short (65 km, 1.5 hours). Pune, Maharashtra's second city, was the former capital of the Maratha Empire—the one that stood up to both the Mughals and the British. Start with Shaniwar Wada, the fortified palace of the Peshwas (Maratha prime ministers), built in 1732. A mysterious fire in 1828 destroyed almost everything—only the imposing perimeter walls and massive gates remain. The Delhi Gate, the main entrance, bristles with 72 steel spikes designed to prevent war elephant charges. The contrast between the grandeur of the ruins and the emptiness inside is striking—imagine this palace at its peak, when the Peshwas ruled an empire stretching from southern to northern India.
⏱ 60 minNext, visit Aga Khan Palace, an elegant 1892 building surrounded by gardens, whose history is inseparable from India's independence struggle. The British imprisoned Gandhi, his wife Kasturba, and his secretary Mahadev Desai here from 1942 to 1944, during the "Quit India" movement. Kasturba died here on February 22, 1944—a memorial and samadhi (cremation site) mark the spot in the gardens. The museum inside traces Gandhi's life through photographs, letters, and personal objects. The atmosphere is emotionally charged.
⏱ 75 minFor Indian craft enthusiasts, the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum houses a staggering collection of 20,000 art objects assembled by one man over his lifetime: musical instruments, ornate locks, oil lamps, weapons, carved doors, palanquins. It's a cabinet of Indian curiosities that makes your head spin.
⏱ 60 min
Pune is a dynamic student city—spend the evening exploring the Koregaon Park neighborhood, with its cafés, restaurants, and bars. The culinary scene is diverse: from traditional Maharashtrian restaurants to trendy cafés. Try misal pav—Pune's signature dish, a spicy sprouted lentil curry served with soft bread rolls, topped with farsan (crunchy garnish).

The road from Pune to Aurangabad (235 km, 4.5 hours) crosses the Deccan plateau—a landscape of cotton fields, sugarcane, and dusty villages. Aurangabad is your base for the next three days and Maharashtra's two UNESCO jewels: Ajanta and Ellora.
⏱ 270 minUpon arrival, visit Bibi Ka Maqbara, the mausoleum built in 1660 by Azam Shah, son of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, in memory of his mother Dilras Banu. It's called the "Poor Man's Taj" or "Taj of the Deccan"—and with good reason: it's an unabashed replica of the Taj Mahal, but executed on a much more modest budget. The base is marble, but the upper portion is stucco painted to imitate marble. The result is both touching and fascinating: same proportions, same Mughal gardens, same symmetry, but a finish that betrays the financial constraints. Far from being a "fake Taj," it's a monument that tells a story of filial love and thwarted ambition.
⏱ 60 minEarly afternoon, push on to Daulatabad Fort, 15 km from Aurangabad—a 12th-century fortress perched on a 200-meter-high conical hill, considered one of India's most impregnable forts. The craziest story: in 1327, Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq decided to move the entire capital from Delhi here—forcing hundreds of thousands of people to march over 1,000 km across the Deccan. The plan failed miserably and he eventually sent everyone back to Delhi. The climb to the summit passes through dark passages, crocodile moats (now dry), and a spiral tunnel designed to trap invaders in the dark. The view from the top embraces the entire Deccan plateau.
⏱ 120 minIf time allows, detour to Aurangabad Caves—12 Buddhist caves from the 6th-7th centuries, far less known than Ajanta and Ellora but remarkable for their female sculptures of exceptional grace. You'll likely have them all to yourself.

Full day dedicated to Ajanta Caves—plan an early morning departure from Aurangabad (100 km, 2.5 hours drive). Thirty Buddhist caves carved into the horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora River, UNESCO-listed since 1983. They were excavated in two phases: the first in the 2nd century BC by monks of the Hinayana tradition, the second in the 5th-6th centuries under the Vakatakas, a period of artistic genius without parallel. The caves were abandoned, forgotten, engulfed by jungle for over 1,000 years—until a British officer on a tiger hunt, John Smith, rediscovered them in 1819.
⏱ 150 minCave 1 is the absolute masterpiece. The murals—technically tempera on dry plaster, not frescoes—are among the oldest surviving Indian paintings. The Bodhisattva Padmapani, painted on either side of the sanctuary entrance, is Ajanta's most famous image: a being of troubling beauty, eyes half-closed in compassion, adorned with jewels but his gaze turned inward. The duality between sensuality and spirituality is strikingly modern. Opposite, the Vajrapani, protector wielding the thunderbolt, completes the duo.
⏱ 60 minDon't miss Cave 17, which preserves the site's most colorful and best-preserved paintings—scenes from Buddha's life with a chromatic vivacity that defies the centuries. Cave 26 houses a 7-meter reclining Buddha, in parinirvana (entering final nirvana), carved from rock with a serenity that stops you dead. Cave 19, a richly decorated chaitya, shows the Buddha in anthropomorphic form—a turning point in Buddhist art.
⏱ 90 minA mandatory shuttle connects the parking lot to the caves (4 km). The entire site requires 4 to 5 hours to visit. Bring water, a flashlight (the caves are dark), comfortable shoes, and patience—crowds can be heavy in high season. Flash photography is prohibited to protect the paintings. REMINDER: CLOSED MONDAYS.
⏱ 30 minThe late afternoon return to Aurangabad is the moment to breathe. The road passes through rural Maharashtra landscapes—sorghum fields, buffalo herds, village temples. Dine at one of Aurangabad's restaurants—Marathwada cuisine is robust and spicy, with specialties like naan qalia (spiced lamb) inherited from Mughal cuisine.

Full day at Ellora Caves, just 30 km from Aurangabad. This UNESCO site of 34 caves is unique in the world: Buddhist (caves 1-12), Hindu (caves 13-29), and Jain (caves 30-34) temples carved side by side into the same basalt cliff, between the 6th and 11th centuries. This architectural coexistence of three different religions is an exceptional testimony to religious tolerance in ancient India.
⏱ 30 minThe Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) is THE monument that alone justifies the journey. Imagine: an entire temple carved from top to bottom from a single basalt block, starting from the roof and working down—the reverse of all classical construction. The 8th-century architects, under King Krishna I of the Rashtrakuta dynasty, had between 150,000 and 200,000 tons of rock extracted to sculpt this temple dedicated to Shiva. The result: a structure 50 meters long, 33 meters wide, and 30 meters high—twice the surface area of Athens' Parthenon. The sculptures adorning the walls—Ravana lifting Mount Kailash, Shiva and Parvati, life-size elephants—are dramatically powerful. An ancient text from 812 AD reports that the architect himself, upon seeing his completed work, exclaimed: "How did I build this?"
⏱ 150 minNext, explore the Buddhist caves—Cave 10 (Vishvakarma or "Carpenter's Cave") is a spectacular chaitya with a vault imitating wooden framework. Cave 12 (Teen Tal) is a three-story monastery carved from rock, of impressive monumentality. The Jain caves (30-34), later in date, are extraordinarily finely chiseled—the details of the sculptures and painted ceilings are almost jeweler-like in precision.
⏱ 120 minBefore leaving Ellora, detour to Grishneshwar Temple, 2 km from the caves—one of the 12 Jyotirlinga, Shiva's most sacred temples in India. The current temple dates from the 18th century, but the site has been sacred for much longer. The atmosphere of devotion is intense. REMINDER: Ellora is CLOSED TUESDAYS.

The road from Aurangabad to Nashik (225 km, 4.5 hours) crosses the Deccan plateau before descending toward the verdant hills of the Nashik valley. Nashik is one of Hinduism's holiest cities—it hosts the Kumbh Mela every 12 years, the world's largest human gathering (tens of millions of pilgrims). The Godavari River, which Hindus consider the "Ganges of the South," flows through the city.
⏱ 270 minExplore the sacred ghats along the Godavari—Ramkund is the most important, the place where according to tradition Rama bathed during his exile. Pilgrims bathe here to wash away their sins, and this is where funerary ash immersion rites take place. The atmosphere is intense: temple bells, chants, marigold flowers floating on the water, priests in white dhotis.
⏱ 60 minIf time permits, push on to Trimbakeshwar, 30 km from Nashik—one of the 12 Jyotirlinga (Shiva's most sacred temples in India). The current black stone temple, built in the 18th century by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao, is surrounded by green hills. It's also the source of the Godavari, which rises on Brahmagiri hill just above. The sanctuary interior is reserved for Hindus, but the exterior architecture and atmosphere are worth the visit.
⏱ 90 minFor archaeology enthusiasts, Pandavleni Caves (or Trirashmi) are a complex of 24 Buddhist caves carved between the 3rd century BC and 2nd century AD—among Maharashtra's oldest. Less spectacular than Ajanta, they offer a glimpse of primitive Buddhist monastic architecture in a peaceful setting.
⏱ 60 minSurprise: Nashik is India's "wine capital." Its altitude (around 600 m), dry climate, and volcanic soils create conditions close to California's Napa Valley. Several wineries are open to visitors—Sula Vineyards, the pioneer, offers tastings with views over the lake and vines. York Winery and Grover Zampa are other good options. End the day with a glass of local Chenin Blanc watching the sunset over the hills—an unexpected contrast with the morning's millennia-old temples.

The return from Nashik to Mumbai (170 km, 3.5 hours) brings you back to the megacity for your final day. Start with a place most tourists miss: Banganga Tank, a 12th-century sacred pool nestled among the skyscrapers of Malabar Hill, one of Mumbai's most expensive neighborhoods. According to legend, the god Rama, thirsty during his journey to Sri Lanka to rescue Sita, shot an arrow that made a tributary of the Ganges spring forth at this spot. The pool, surrounded by small ruined temples and ancient houses, exudes a village atmosphere frozen in time—200 meters from the glass and steel towers. It's one of Mumbai's best-kept secrets.
⏱ 45 minHead to Kala Ghoda, Mumbai's arts district. This small perimeter of pedestrian streets and colonial buildings concentrates art galleries, independent bookstores, design boutiques, and cafés. The annual Kala Ghoda Festival in February transforms the district into an open-air cultural celebration. Even outside festival season, it's the ideal place to feel the city's creative pulse, far from the clichés of poverty and chaos.
⏱ 60 minEnd with Chor Bazaar—literally the "Thieves' Market"—in the Mutton Street neighborhood. This labyrinth of alleyways is Mumbai's largest flea market: antiques, colonial furniture, Bollywood film props, old clocks, gramophones, Art Deco door handles salvaged from demolished buildings. Legend says you can find a stolen object here a few days after losing it. Bargain hard—opening prices are inflated for tourists, but the atmosphere is good-natured.
⏱ 90 min
Before heading to the airport, treat yourself to one last Mumbaikar meal. If you want refined dining, Fort district restaurants offer high-end contemporary Indian cuisine. If you prefer authentic, one last vada pav from a street stall will be your Mumbai madeleine. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from South Mumbai depending on traffic—and in Mumbai, traffic is always an unpredictable variable. Allow plenty of time.
