Sipoo

Lake Kuusijärvi sits at the western entrance to Sipoonkorpi park—a natural starting point for the day. A sandy beach, two public saunas by the lake (including a traditional smoke sauna), picnic areas, and a pedestrian bridge leading straight into the park's forests. In winter, the bravest bathers practice ice swimming in a dedicated hole cut into the ice.

⏱ 60 min
2

Sipoonkorpi National Park was established in 2011—one of Finland's newest and most visited, just 24 km from central Helsinki. Its dense conifer forests, bogs, and rocky cliffs shaped by the last glaciation shelter the eagle owl, flying squirrel, and black woodpecker. The Byabäcken trail (1.4 km) is the shortest and most accessible—it follows fields and a stream with views of traditional pastures. If you have energy, the Kalkinpolttajanpolku (5 km) climbs to the summit of Högberget, the park's highest point, where views stretch to Helsinki's eastern suburbs.

⏱ 120 min
3

In the village of Nikkilä, you'll find two religious architectures from radically different eras side by side: the medieval stone church from the 15th century and its 19th-century neo-Gothic neighbor. The contrast is striking from the road. Just behind, the former grounds of Nikkilä psychiatric hospital are now open for walks—the late 19th-century red brick buildings still stand in a strangely peaceful wooded setting.

⏱ 60 min
4

Gumbostrand Konst & Form is an art gallery set in a former fishing village by the sea, east of Sipoo. Exhibitions rotate regularly and blend visual arts with quality crafts. If you're there in good weather, the waterfront terrace alone is worth the trip.

The traditional sauna by Lake Kuusijärvi is open year-round. Plan an hour to enjoy the sauna and a dip in the lake—the water is cool from September onward. The experience is quintessentially Finnish and accessible without reservation.

Porvoo

★★★☆☆
Porvoo 1
Porvoo 2
1

Old Porvoo is one of Finland's best-preserved medieval towns—the country's second-oldest city, founded in the 14th century, with town rights granted in 1346. Its cobblestone lanes and colorful wooden houses date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The iconic image is the red ochre warehouses lining the Porvoonjoki River—built in the 1760s to store spices, wines, and tobacco imported by boat. The red color was reportedly first applied to welcome King Gustav III with dignity. Cross the Old Bridge for the best overall view: cathedral on the hill, warehouses in the water, colorful facades—this is the Porvoo photo.

⏱ 90 min
2

Porvoo Cathedral crowns the old town from a hilltop. Built mainly in the 15th century from granite, it has endured fires, bombardments, and even a burglary throughout its 700-year history. This is where, in 1809, during the Diet of Porvoo, Tsar Alexander I granted Finland its autonomy as a Grand Duchy of Russia—a pivotal moment in Finnish history. A commemorative plaque inside recalls this event.

⏱ 45 min
3

The home of J.L. Runeberg, Finland's national poet, is the country's oldest house museum—opened to the public as early as 1882. Runeberg settled here in 1852 to teach Greek literature and spent his last 25 years in this house, 14 of them bedridden following a stroke. Everything is original: wallpapers, library, hunting weapons in the 'fox fur room.' His wife Fredrika also invented the almond and arrack tart that bears his name—available year-round in Porvoo, though elsewhere in Finland it's only sold in January-February.

⏱ 60 min
4

Albert Edelfelt's studio lies a few kilometers from the center, in Haikko. Edelfelt, born in Porvoo in 1854, spent 26 summers in the area and painted over 220 works there—some prize-winning in Paris and acquired by international museum collections. The studio built in 1883 now functions as a museum: you see his belongings, sketches, and letters to his mother, where he wrote that he feared above all 'becoming a failure.' He died in Haikko in 1905, at age 51.

⏱ 60 min
5

Holm House, built in 1763, immerses you in the interior of a wealthy 18th-century merchant. The Gustavian furniture, china, and silverware are period-authentic. It adjoins the Porvoo Museum, housed in the former Town Hall from 1764 on Raatihuoneentori Square—one of Finland's oldest surviving town halls.

⏱ 60 min

Activities

In summer, a steamboat connects Helsinki to Porvoo, sailing up the coast and the Porvoonjoki—the crossing takes about 3.5 hours and passes Haikko Manor. If you arrive by boat, return by bus (the reverse trip takes 1h10) to optimize your day. Check schedules in advance as departures are limited.

⏱ 120 min

The Porvoo archipelago can be explored by boat from the harbor. Kråkö Island features gardens, artisan workshops, and coastal trails—the crossing is short and the atmosphere evokes the 19th-century Finnish archipelago, without crowds.

Loviisa was founded in 1745 as a frontier fortress town against Russia, and renamed in 1752 by King Adolf Frederick in honor of his wife Queen Lovisa Ulrika—hence its nickname 'the Queen's Town.' Its historic center miraculously survived the great fire of 1855 and remains one of Finland's best-preserved wooden house ensembles. The Laivasilta harbor market offers beautiful sea views and access to waterfront restaurants.

⏱ 75 min

Malmgård Manor has been in the Creutz family for over 400 years—the current owner is its 14th representative. The current main building, in exposed brick with neo-Renaissance influences from northern France and the Netherlands, dates from the 19th century. It's primarily a working organic farm: grains, craft brewery, award-winning flours. The farm shop is worth the stop.

⏱ 75 min
3

Strömfors Ironworks, in Ruotsinpyhtää, was founded in 1698—the village's Swedish name comes directly from its 18th-century owners: Anders Nohrström and Jacob Forsell. The red and white wooden buildings characteristic of Nordic countries still line the Kymi River. Now converted into an open-air museum, they house artisan workshops, galleries, restaurants, and a hydraulic hammer—the only one still functioning in the country. If you're there in the right season, watch for blacksmithing demonstrations.

Valkmusa National Park is a vast coastal bog between Loviisa and Kotka, crossed by wooden boardwalks. An observation tower allows you to contemplate the moorland stretching to the horizon—a typical southern Finnish landscape, very quiet and little visited.

Hamina is a unique curiosity in Europe: it's one of only two cities in the world whose layout is inscribed within a circular fortress—the other being Palmanova, Italy. The fortress was built from 1722 under Swedish General Axel von Löwen, modeled on Italian Renaissance bastion fortresses. Six bastions—named after Finnish cities: Savonlinna, Turku, Helsinki, Lappeenranta, Hämeenlinna, and the central bastion—surround a radial town center with eight streets radiating from Town Hall Square. The Fortress Trail (4.5 km) circles the complete ramparts, passing through vaulted corridors and former casemates. Take it clockwise from the Flag Tower.

⏱ 90 min
2

Hamina's historic center is explored from Town Hall Square, where the eight radial streets begin—a layout you won't see anywhere else. 19th-century wooden houses and religious buildings (C.L. Engel's Lutheran church, 1843; the Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul) punctuate the walk. The Central Bastion, restored in the 1990s, hosts the Hamina Tattoo in summer, an international military music festival—Europe's largest covered open-air arena during these events.

⏱ 60 min
3

Verla Groundwood and Board Mill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, is about 30 km north of Hamina. This late 19th-century industrial village is one of the world's few fully preserved examples of a small rural industry—factory buildings, workers' houses, and period equipment. Just next to the museum, on a rock face above the rapids, you'll find prehistoric rock paintings dating from around 7,000 BCE.

⏱ 90 min

Activities

Hamina's Fortress Trail can also be done by bike—local rental shops offer two-wheelers in season. From the ramparts, the view of the old bastions and surrounding gardens is particularly beautiful in the evening.

Repovesi National Park regularly ranks in the top 10 most visited national parks in Finland—and you understand why as soon as you see the cliffs plunging into the lakes. The terrain is rugged: pine and spruce forests, rocky hills carved by glaciers, crystal-clear lakes. The classic loop from the main entrance connects several summits with breathtaking views, suspension bridges, and bivouac sites with wood supplies. Bring solid hiking boots—the terrain can be slippery on the rocks.

Mustila Arboretum, founded in 1902, is the largest and oldest arboretum park in Northern Europe. Across 120 hectares, it brings together nearly 100 conifer species and 120 deciduous species introduced from around the world. It's especially famous for its Rhododendron Valley, spectacular in June when over 50 species bloom simultaneously. Off-season, the giant conifers—hemlock, Douglas fir, Serbian spruce—create an unexpected primeval forest atmosphere.
