Verla Groundwood and Board Mill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, is about 30 km north of Hamina. This late 19th-century industrial village is one of the world's few fully preserved examples of a small rural industry—factory buildings, workers' houses, and period equipment. Just next to the museum, on a rock face above the rapids, you'll find prehistoric rock paintings dating from around 7,000 BCE.
