Suomenlinna Fortress sits just 20 minutes by ferry from Market Square—it's the first thing you should see in Helsinki. Built by Sweden starting in 1748 under Admiral Augustin Ehrensvärd to counter Russian expansion, it mobilized over 6,500 Finnish and Swedish soldiers and was one of the largest construction projects in the Swedish empire during the 18th century. Listed as a UNESCO site in 1991, it's still home to 850 permanent residents. Plan half a day: the ramparts, tunnels, King's Gate, museums, and harbor views are all worth your time. In summer, locals picnic on the bastions in the evening—arrive early in the morning to beat the tour groups.
⏱ 150 minHelsinki Cathedral dominates Senate Square with its green dome visible from the harbor. Carl Ludvig Engel worked on it from 1818 until his death in 1840; it was completed twelve years later by other architects. Built as St. Nicholas Church in honor of Tsar Nicholas I, it was renamed at Finnish independence in 1917. Climb the steps from the square—the panorama across Engel's neoclassical ensemble is one of the most harmonious urban views in Helsinki. A bell chimes every day at 5:49 PM.
⏱ 45 minTemppeliaukio Church is carved directly into bedrock—architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen won the competition in 1961, and construction began in 1968. The 24-meter copper dome rests on concrete beams that allow natural light to filter between the raw rock and the cupola. The acoustics are so exceptional that the hall regularly serves as a concert venue. Nearly 500,000 people visit it every year—arrive early in the morning to see it without crowds.
⏱ 45 minUspenski Orthodox Cathedral overlooks the harbor from its red-brick hill, crowned with golden domes. Designed by Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev and completed in 1868, it's the largest orthodox cathedral in Western Europe. The view from the terrace across the harbor to Suomenlinna island in the background is one of the finest in Helsinki—visit in the evening when the light slants low.
⏱ 30 minMarket Square—Kauppatori—is Helsinki's maritime heart: smoked salmon, wild berries, local handicrafts in colorful stalls by the waterfront. It's also the departure point for ferries to Suomenlinna. Arrive in the morning for the best produce; in summer, restaurant terraces serve until evening.
⏱ 60 minThe Design District spans 25 streets and over 200 shops, galleries, and workshops in the southern quarter. The Design Museum, in an 1873 building, traces how a newly independent country built a global visual identity—Marimekko, Iittala, Fiskars. Allow 2 hours depending on your interest in design.

Kallio is Helsinki's vibrant, alternative quarter—far from the usual tourist circuits. Kallio Church, designed by Lars Sonck and completed in 1912 in National Romantic style, dominates the neighborhood from its hill; its bells play a Sibelius chorale. Just below, Hakaniemi Market Hall (1914) is housed in renovated red brick—this is where locals buy their smoked salmon and artisan cheeses, not at Kauppatori.
⏱ 75 minAteneum, Finland's National Gallery, occupies a Neo-Renaissance building from 1887 opposite the central railway station. Its collection spans two centuries of Finnish art, from 19th-century masters—Edelfelt, Schjerfbeck, Gallen-Kallela—to 20th-century expressionists. This is where you grasp how a country built a cultural identity from almost nothing. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
⏱ 90 minKiasma, the museum of contemporary art designed by Steven Holl and opened in 1998, is an architectural sculpture at the heart of the city—its curved facade plays with natural light throughout the day. The temporary exhibitions are among the sharpest in the Nordic countries. If you only have time for one museum, choose according to taste: Ateneum for classic Finnish art, Kiasma for contemporary.
⏱ 75 minLöyly public sauna, on the former Hernesaari docks, blends contemporary architecture (wood, glass, sea views) with Finnish tradition—plunge into the Baltic Sea directly from the terrace. It's one of the best sauna experiences in Helsinki. Book ahead on weekends: slots fill fast.

Tampere as a day trip from Helsinki—the train takes 1h45 each way, leave early. The Finlayson Quarter was born in 1820 when Scottish industrialist James Finlayson opened a textile workshop on the Tammerkoski Rapids—this is where Tampere's industrial history begins, earning it the nickname 'Manchester of Finland'. The converted red-brick buildings now house museums, cinemas, and restaurants. In the Werstas Labour Museum, the massive Sulzer engine purchased in 1900 to power the mill still sits in its original location. Free admission.
⏱ 75 minThe Moomin Museum, housed in Tampere Hall since 2017, is the only museum in the world dedicated to Tove Jansson's universe. These aren't reproductions—the original ink and watercolor illustrations, and the three-dimensional dioramas that Jansson herself and her partner Tuulikki Pietilä built by hand. Jansson donated the entire collection to the city of Tampere in 1986. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
⏱ 90 minPyynikki Observation Tower stands on the world's highest gravel ridge—a glacial esker. The current tower dates from 1929, and from the 26-meter summit, the two lakes that frame Tampere—Näsijärvi to the north and Pyhäjärvi to the south—are visible simultaneously. The tower cafe serves munkki (fried doughnuts), the most famous in Finland. Don't leave without trying one.
⏱ 60 min
Tampere Market Hall (Kauppahalli, 1901) is the place to taste mustamakkara—Tampere's black sausage made with blood and oats, served with lingonberry jam. The city's culinary specialty, impossible to find in this form elsewhere. Don't grimace before you've tried it.
⏱ 60 minTampere is best explored on foot from the station—the Tammerkoski Rapids flow 700 meters through the city center between the two lakes. A walk along the banks from Finlayson to the central bridge gives you the best overview of the converted industrial city. Return to Helsinki for tomorrow's flight to Rovaniemi.

Start with Turku Castle—the largest surviving medieval building in Finland, under construction since 1280 at the mouth of the Aura River. Its golden age came between 1556 and 1563, when Duke John of Finland established a Renaissance court there with his Polish wife Catherine Jagiellon. She brought jewels, velvet, and forks—then unknown in Finland—in her dowry. Her older brother King Erik eventually besieged the castle and imprisoned them both for three years—before a coup reversed their fortunes. Allow at least 2 hours.
⏱ 120 minTurku Cathedral is the national sanctuary of Lutheran Finland—consecrated in 1300, it's the mother church of the entire country. Its 101-meter tower was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1827. Inside, look for the sarcophagus of Queen Karin Månsdotter, wife of King Erik XIV—imprisoned here after her husband's fall and died in Turku in 1612. It's the only royal burial in Finland.
⏱ 45 minThe Luostarinmäki quarter is an anomaly—the only part of Turku to survive intact from the 1827 fire. About forty 18th-century wooden houses converted into a living museum with period-costumed craftsmen in their original workshops. Quiet and authentic.
⏱ 60 minThe Aura River flows through the center, its banks lined with restaurant boats serving until midnight in summer. Walk from the cathedral to the castle (3 km along the waterfront) and return by the opposite bank—you'll see the whole city effortlessly.

Naantali, 16 km from Turku (35-50 min by bus), has a wooden old town descending toward a lively marina. From the harbor, watch for the flag on Luonnonmaa island: when it flies over Villa Kultaranta, the President of the Republic is in summer residence.
⏱ 60 minMoominworld sits on Kailo island, connected to central Naantali by a pedestrian bridge. Tove Jansson received the first key to the park on its opening day in 1993. The experience is narrative—you step into the world of the books, not an amusement park with rides. Perfect with children, but Jansson fans of all ages find something here. The Pommern is Mariehamn's first shock—a 96-meter four-masted barque built in 1903, the best-preserved sailing cargo ship in the world. Go aboard: crew cabins, hold, deck, masts. This ship rounded Cape Horn carrying grain between Australia and Europe, some voyages lasting four months. Next door, the Åland Maritime Museum traces three centuries of maritime tradition across three floors.
⏱ 90 minWalk down Torggatan, Mariehamn's main street, and step inside the Åland parliament—an autonomous region of Finland since 1922, demilitarized, Swedish-speaking, with its own parliament, stamps, and flag. Founded in 1861 by Tsar Alexander II who named it after his wife, it's the only capital city in the world created by a Russian tsar.
⏱ 60 minAt the Åland Museum, don't miss the exhibition on the 'Champagnegaleas'—in 2010, divers discovered a wreck with 168 bottles of champagne dating from 1840, the oldest champagne ever found in the world. Some bottles were still effervescent when opened.
⏱ 75 minThe Turku→Mariehamn ferry takes 5 to 6 hours—it's not a constraint, it's a crossing to experience. The ferries are large ships with buffet, bars, and panoramic decks from which the archipelago gradually reveals itself. Book in summer, ferries fill up on weekends.

Kastelholm, 25 km northeast of Mariehamn, is Åland's only medieval castle. Built in the late 14th century, it hosted Swedish kings including Gustaf Vasa, was the scene of witchcraft trials in the 1660s, burned in 1745, served as a prison then as a stone quarry for local farmers before being restored between 1982 and 1989. Open May to mid-September.

Kamppi Chapel of Silence, opened in 2012, is a curved block of wood set in the middle of a busy commercial square—a secular space for contemplation open to all, with no religious services. The interior of blond spruce and the curve of the walls create unique acoustics and light. Step inside for five minutes for the contrast with the surrounding bustle.
⏱ 20 minThe Sibelius Monument, in a park northwest of the center, was sculpted by Eila Hiltunen and unveiled in 1967—600 hollow steel pipes welded in a wave shape. The sculptor wanted to capture the essence of Sibelius's music rather than his portrait. After criticism, the composer's portrait was added alongside. Both together, it's a typically Finnish anecdote.

⏱ 120 minKorundi, the House of Culture, occupies one of the few buildings in Rovaniemi to survive World War II—the former postal truck depot. If you're traveling in winter, book your activities several months in advance—slots go fast.

Rovaniemi's urban plan was drawn by Alvar Aalto after the 1944 destruction—shaped like reindeer antlers viewed from the sky. The main library on Hallituskatu, also by Aalto, is worth visiting for its skylights with indirect lighting and original Artek furniture. It's a working library, enter freely.
⏱ 30 minIn winter (mid-August to early April), northern lights are visible on clear nights. Guides organize snowmobile excursions to open sites far from city lights. Patience is required—expect several attempts. In summer, the midnight sun takes over: the sky doesn't darken between early June and early July.

Lappeenranta Fortress is the city's oldest quarter—founded in 1649 under Swedish rule, fortified from 1722 by Axel von Löwen to secure the border with Russia, then captured by Russian troops in 1741. The ramparts now house three museums, an art gallery, and the oldest Orthodox church in Finland, built in 1785. Wander the cobbled lanes—the smell of tar and gunpowder mentioned by the local tourist guide is no exaggeration.
⏱ 90 minLappeenranta harbor is the heart of the city in summer—terraces, markets, concerts, and direct views over Lake Saimaa. The giant sand castle, rebuilt every summer since 2004 with 3 million kilograms of sand by international sculptors, has a new theme each year. Vety and Atomi—meat and hard-boiled egg pasties sold since the 1960s—are found in market kiosks. Order them with ketchup, mustard, and onions, like the locals.
⏱ 60 minLake Saimaa is explored by kayak from the harbor—rental companies offer half-day trips in the archipelago. With its 4,400 km², 15,000 islands, and 15,000 km of coastline, Saimaa is an inland sea. If you're lucky, you'll spot from the water the Saimaa ringed seal—only about 480 individuals remain in the world, all in this lake.

Imatrankoski Rapids formed 5,000 years ago when Saimaa waters breached the Salpausselkä ridge. Empress Catherine II of Russia came to admire them in 1772 with her entire entourage—this is how tourism began in Imatra. In 1929, a dam dried up the riverbed. Today, from June to August (Wednesday to Sunday at 6 PM), the dam opens for 16 minutes: 400 m³ of water per second surge through the gorges to Sibelius music. The show is free. Position yourself on Koskisilta Bridge for the best view. Arrive 20 minutes early—crowds gather.
⏱ 60 minValtionhotelli, built in 1903 in Art Nouveau style as a castle by the rapids, is Imatra's most striking building—it replaced two wooden hotels that had burned. Even if you're not staying, the facade from the park is worth a photo.
⏱ 20 minThe Church of the Three Crosses in Imatra is an Alvar Aalto work, completed in 1957 and considered by specialists his most original religious creation. The main hall divides into three independent naves by sliding partitions—a typically Aalto solution: functional and unexpected.
⏱ 30 min
Kruununpuisto Park runs along the rapids from Koskisilta Bridge to 19th-century rock carvings—royal signatures left in the rock by illustrious visitors, including Emperor Pedro II of Brazil in 1876. An hour's walk in a shaded, historic setting.

Punkaharju Ridge, en route to Savonlinna, is one of Finland's most celebrated national landscapes. A narrow strip of land formed 11,000 years ago separates two lakes of the Saimaa system—the scenic route (7 km) runs along the ridge between centuries-old pines with water shimmering on both sides. Tsar Alexander I visited in 1802 and expressed the wish that it be preserved—protected since 1843, it's one of the oldest nature reserves in the world. Drive the route slowly or by bike.
⏱ 90 minOlavinlinna Castle, perched on a rocky islet in the middle of the lake at Savonlinna, is the northernmost medieval stone castle in Europe. Built in 1475 by Danish knight Erik Axelsson Tott to defend the Savo region, Finnish soprano Aino Ackté discovered it at a political meeting in 1907 and created an opera festival here in 1912. Today, 60,000 spectators per year come to hear operas in the castle's inner courtyards in July. If you're there in July, book well in advance. Outside the festival, the castle is open year-round.
⏱ 90 minKerimäki Church, 23 km from Savonlinna, is the world's largest wooden church—45 meters long, 42 meters wide, 27 meters high, seating over 3,000. Completed in 1847 by architect A.F. Grandstedt. An anecdote circulates: the architect worked in centimeters but the builder read the plans in inches. The reality is less amusing but more coherent: the church was meant to accommodate half the region's population.
⏱ 45 minA cruise on a historic steamboat through the Savonlinna archipelago lets you see Saimaa from the water. Some offer Saimaa ringed seal observation trips in season. Inquire at Savonlinna harbor—schedules change each year.

Ukko-Koli summit at 347 meters is the highest point in the southern half of Finland—and the panorama from the white quartzite cliff over Lake Pielinen is the country's most reproduced national landscape. Jean Sibelius came here in 1904 and composed on these rocks. The rock is among the oldest in continental Europe—remnants of a mountain range formed 1.8 billion years ago. The climb from Ukko Nature Centre takes 10 minutes.
⏱ 90 minThe Summit Trail (1.3 km) connects Ukko-Koli, Akka-Koli, and Paha-Koli—named after gods from Finnish mythology. The site was considered sacred and wasn't colonized until 200 years after surrounding areas. Pirunkirkko cave (Devil's Church), 34 meters long, is at the summit—look for it, it's well hidden.
⏱ 75 min
For a full day, take the Mäkränaho loop (7 km) from the summits—it descends toward ancient forests where Eero Järnefelt painted his autumn landscapes. Slash-and-burn meadows, birch and pine forests, rock faces. Bring sturdy shoes.

Nurmes has a remarkably preserved wooden quarter—Puu-Nurmes—sloping streets shaded by birches and houses from the 1880s-1930s, without crowds. The Karelian village of Bomba, on the shores of Pielinen, recreates traditional Karelian wooden architecture with decorated log houses, an Orthodox chapel, and restaurants serving authentic regional cuisine. Dine at Bomba—the Karelian stew (karjalanpaisti) has been simmering for hours and you won't easily find it again when you return.
⏱ 120 minThe shores of Lake Pielinen around Nurmes lend themselves to beautiful evening walks. The lake is 93 km long—from certain points on the shore, you can't see the opposite bank, and you understand why Finns speak of their lakes as an inland sea.

Artist Eva Ryynänen's workshop at Paateri, 20 km from Lieksa, is one of the most singular places in eastern Finland. Ryynänen (1915-2001) spent her entire life here, carving wooden figures from Karelian mythology. She built with her own hands her house, workshop, a round gallery, and a small log church by a lake. This isn't an institutional museum—it's the trace of an entire life spent in the forest.
⏱ 75 minRuunaa Rapids, 30 km from Lieksa, are Finland's wildest whitewater—30 km of Lieksanjoki River with six successive rapids toward the Russian border. Local operators offer descents by traditional wooden raft or kayak with campfire lunch. Allow 4 hours. Book ahead—it's the main activity in the region.

Valamo Monastery, in Heinävesi—about 100 km southwest of Joensuu on the return route—is the heart of Orthodox life in Finland. The community took refuge here from Lake Ladoga in 1940, bringing their icons. The main church, gardens, and monastery product shop (house wines, honey, cheeses) are worth a 2-hour stop. The place is open to non-believers and the atmosphere is peaceful—there's nothing touristy about it.
⏱ 90 minReturn to Helsinki (400 km from Lieksa, about 4 hours with the Valamo stop). The Esplanade in the evening is the best way to conclude three weeks in Finland—the pedestrian boulevard between Market Square and the Design District, summer terraces, calm and slanting light. You leave from Helsinki and you return to it. Full circle.
