Lappeenranta Fortress stands as the city's oldest quarter, founded in 1649 when Governor-General Per Brahe the Younger established a trading post on the peninsula jutting into Lake Saimaa. The Swedes began fortification work in 1722 under Axel von Löwen to secure the frontier after losing territory to Russia. In 1741, Russian troops seized control—the fortress remained Russian until Finnish independence in 1917. Most of the buildings you see today date from the Russian era. Within the ramparts, you'll find the Lappeenranta Art Museum, the South Karelia Museum, and the Cavalry Museum, alongside Finland's oldest Orthodox church, built in 1785. The cobbled lanes and weathered limestone buildings reward a slow wander.
⏱ 90 minLappeenranta Harbor comes alive in summer—restaurant terraces spill onto the waterfront, markets buzz with energy, concerts fill the air, and Lake Saimaa stretches endlessly before you. This is also where the giant sand castle rises each summer, rebuilt annually since 2004 by international sculptors around a rotating theme, using 3 million kilograms of sand. In summer months, hunt down the local pastries called Vety and Atomi—meat and hard-boiled egg hand pies sold from market kiosks since the 1960s. Don't leave without trying one.
⏱ 60 minThe Saimaa Canal Museum, accessible from downtown via the canal bike path, tells the story of the Saimaa Canal linking the lake to the Gulf of Finland. Construction began in 1845 and wrapped up in 1858—at the time, it was the largest construction project ever undertaken in Finland, costing 3 million silver rubles. Every lock is faced entirely with local granite.
⏱ 60 minLake Saimaa reveals itself best from a kayak launched from Lappeenranta Harbor—rental outfits offer half-day and full-day paddles through the archipelago. It's the most visceral way to grasp the scale of this 4,400 km² inland sea, with its 15,000 islands and 15,000 km of shoreline. The Saimaa ringed seal, with only about 480 individuals left in the world, lives exclusively in this lake.
⏱ 180 minA cruise from Lappeenranta Harbor into the archipelago puts you on Saimaa's surface—some operators run seal-watching excursions in season (spring-summer). It's a rare encounter: the Saimaa ringed seal ranks among Europe's most endangered mammals.

Imatrankoski Rapids formed 5,000 years ago when Lake Saimaa's waters broke through the Salpausselkä Ridge. As early as 1772, Empress Catherine II of Russia came to admire them with her entourage—making this one of Finland's oldest tourist attractions. By the late 19th century, Imatrankoski had become one of Europe's most visited destinations, with up to 14 trains arriving daily from St. Petersburg. In 1929, the hydroelectric dam silenced the riverbed. Today, from June through August (Wednesday to Sunday at 6 PM), the dam opens for exactly 16 minutes: 400 cubic meters of water per second thunder through the gorge while speakers broadcast Sibelius across the valley. The show is free—stake out a spot on Koskisilta Bridge or in Koskipuisto Park for the best vantage.
⏱ 60 minValtionhotelli, built in 1903 in Art Nouveau style as a castle perched above the rapids, stands as Imatra's most striking landmark. It replaced two wooden hotels that had burned down and was designed to receive wealthy tourists arriving from St. Petersburg. Even if you're not staying overnight, the facade viewed from the park deserves a photograph.
⏱ 20 minThe Church of the Three Crosses in Imatra is an Alvar Aalto creation, completed in 1957—considered by specialists to be his most original religious work. The main hall can be divided into three independent naves by sliding partitions, allowing for separate parish use during the week. Three white altar crosses give the church its name.
⏱ 30 minKruununpuisto Park follows the rapids from Koskisilta Bridge to the ancient rock carvings—royal signatures left in stone by illustrious 19th-century visitors, including Emperor Pedro II of Brazil in 1876. An hour's walk through shaded, historic terrain.

Punkaharju Ridge stands as one of Finland's most celebrated national landscapes—a narrow strip of land formed 11,000 years ago by the retreating glacier, separating two lakes of the Saimaa system: Puruvesi and Pihlajavesi. The scenic road (7 km) runs along the ridge between centuries-old pines, with water gleaming on both sides. Tsar Alexander I visited in 1802 and expressed his wish that it be preserved—it has been protected since 1843, making it one of the world's oldest nature reserves. Drive the scenic route slowly, or better yet, cycle it—you'll understand why this landscape has inspired generations of Finnish poets and painters.
⏱ 90 minThe Finnish Forest Museum Lusto, set on Punkaharju Ridge, traces the relationship between Finns and their forests across centuries—a relationship that has shaped national identity, the economy, and even the country's architecture. The exhibitions are interactive and thoughtfully designed.
⏱ 75 minOlavinlinna Castle—St. Olaf's in Swedish—is the northernmost medieval stone fortress in Europe. Built in 1475 by Danish knight Erik Axelsson Tott to defend the Savo region against Russian attacks, it rises from a rocky islet in the middle of the lake, accessible only by a narrow causeway. Finnish soprano Aino Ackté discovered in 1907 that its walls offered exceptional acoustics and a dramatic backdrop for opera—the first festival took place in 1912. Today the Savonlinna Opera Festival draws 60,000 visitors annually, a quarter from abroad, every July. Outside festival season, the castle remains open year-round with guided tours.
⏱ 90 minKerimäki Church, 23 km from Savonlinna, is the largest wooden church in the world. Architect A.F. Grandstedt completed it in 1847: 45 meters long, 42 meters wide, 27 meters high, dome reaching 37 meters, 1,670 meters of benches seating over 3,000 people. An anecdote circulates: the architect supposedly worked in centimeters but the builder read the plans in inches—hence the outsized scale. The reality is more prosaic: the church was designed to accommodate half the region's population at once.
⏱ 45 min
A cruise aboard a historic steamboat through the Savonlinna archipelago offers one of the finest ways to experience Saimaa from the water. Some operators run themed departures: seal-watching, dinner cruises, autumn mushroom foraging. Inquire at Savonlinna Harbor.

Riihisaari Museum, facing Olavinlinna Castle across the water, serves as the regional museum of Saimaa—it traces the lake's history, the 19th-century steamboats that plied its waters, and the Saimaa ringed seal. Historic vessels are moored at the dock in front of the museum. The inner courtyard with its rocking chairs offers a peaceful view of the castle.
⏱ 75 minSavonlinna Cathedral and the harbor market form the city's beating heart in summer. The market sells muikku—vendace from Lake Puruvesi, whose local fishery holds a European Protected Geographical Indication. Try them fried on the spot: it's Savonlinna's signature dish.

Mikkeli served as the Finnish military headquarters during the Winter War (1939-40) and the Continuation War (1941-44)—Marshal Mannerheim commanded operations from here. The Headquarters Museum, housed in the original building, recounts those years through maps, artifacts, and period documents. Next door, the Muisti Centre (War and Peace) and the Infantry Museum complete the ensemble. For anyone interested in Finnish military history, this ranks among the country's most thoroughly documented sites.
⏱ 90 minMikkeli Cathedral, completed in 1896, is considered one of Finland's purest neo-Gothic structures—64 meters of red brick dominating the entire city. The single-nave interior is austere and imposing.
⏱ 30 minThe Astuvansalmi rock paintings, about 50 km southeast of Mikkeli, are the largest and best-preserved in Finland—over 60 depictions of elk, human figures, and geometric forms traced in red ochre 4,000 to 5,000 years ago on a rock face by the lake. The site is accessible on foot from a parking area and worth the detour if you have time.
⏱ 90 minNeitvuori Hill, about twenty kilometers from Mikkeli, delivers the finest panorama over Lake Saimaa and the South Savo forests. A climb of roughly 30 minutes on foot from the parking lot—the view from the summit sweeps across a landscape of lakes and islands stretching to the horizon.
⏱ 90 minThe route from Mikkeli to Helsinki (230 km, about 2.5 hours by train or 2 hours 45 minutes by car) can be made with a lunch stop at one of the region's manor houses—Tertti or Kyyhkylä offer traditional Finnish buffets in lakeside estate settings.
