Joensuu

Joensuu was founded in 1848 by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia—its name means 'river mouth,' which describes its location exactly. The 1914 city hall is the work of Eliel Saarinen, the Finnish architect who would later conquer America with the Chicago Tribune Tower. Walk past it; this is one of the finest buildings in eastern Finland.

The North Karelian Museum Hilma, housed in the Carelicum building facing the market square, traces the region's history from prehistoric times through the Soviet-Finnish wars. Koli

The summit of Ukko-Koli at 347 meters is the highest point in southern Finland—and the view from the white quartzite cliff over Lake Pielinen is considered the country's most iconic national landscape. Jean Sibelius came here in 1904 and composed part of his Third Symphony on this ridge. Painter Eero Järnefelt captured these hills on a canvas so famous it still adorns the restaurant in Helsinki's central station. The rock itself is among the oldest in continental Europe—remnants of a mountain range equivalent to the Himalayas formed 1.8 billion years ago. The climb from the Ukko Nature Centre takes 10 minutes on foot (800 m).

The Summit Trail (1.3 km from Ukko-Koli) connects the three main peaks named after gods from Finnish mythology: Ukko the Sky God (347 m), Akka the Female Spirit (338 m), and Paha the Evil Spirit (334 m). The site was considered sacred until the 18th century and remained uninhabited 200 years longer than surrounding areas—people were afraid to live here. Pirunkirkko (Devil's Church) cave, 34 meters long, sits atop Ukko-Koli: look for it, it's well hidden.

For a full day at Koli, take the Mäkränaho loop (7 km) from the summits—it descends into old-growth forests where Eero Järnefelt came to paint his autumn landscapes. The terrain is varied and sometimes slippery on the rocks—bring sturdy shoes.

Nurmes is a small town on the northern shore of Lake Pielinen with a remarkably preserved wooden quarter called Puu-Nurmes—sloping streets shaded by birches and houses dating from the 1880s to 1930s.
