Sutri → Ronciglione → Vetralla → Viterbo → Bomarzo → Civita Di Bagnoregio → Montefiascone → Acquapendente

From Sutri, the "Gateway to Etruria," to Acquapendente, the "Jerusalem of Europe," this eight-day circuit crosses the Viterbo Tuscia from south to north. A Roman amphitheatre carved into tufa, papal palaces where the word "conclave" was born, stone creatures of the Park of the Monsters of Bomarzo, the island-village of Civita di Bagnoregio suspended above its calanchi, thermal springs mentioned by Dante: northern Lazio reveals a little-known Italy, far from the crowds of Rome and Tuscany.

Sutri

★★☆☆☆
Sutri 1
Sutri 2
1

Roman Amphitheatre of Sutri - Carved between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC directly into the tufa hillside, this elliptical amphitheatre measuring 49 by 40 meters could hold between 5,000 and 9,000 spectators across three tiers. Not a single masonry stone was used—everything was sculpted from volcanic rock. Buried under vegetation for centuries, locals rediscovered and excavated it between 1835 and 1838.

⏱ 60 min
2

Etruscan Necropolis - Along the cliff below the town, 64 tombs carved into tufa date from the 6th to 4th centuries BC. You'll find niches for cinerary urns, chamber tombs with dromos entrances, and columbaria. A paved path winds between the sculpted rock faces. Sutri bore the title "Gateway to Etruria"—this monumental cemetery proves it.

⏱ 50 min
3

Mithraeum and Church of Santa Maria del Parto - Three adjoining Etruscan tombs were transformed into a sanctuary dedicated to the god Mithras under the Roman Empire, then converted into a Christian church. Step inside to discover 14th-century frescoes depicting the Virgin and sacred scenes, painted directly onto the tufa walls. Local legend claims this cave was where Bertha, Charlemagne's sister, gave birth to Roland, the legendary paladin.

⏱ 45 min
4

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta - Built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, remodeled in the 17th century as Baroque. The original Romanesque bell tower and medieval crypt survive. In 1046, Emperor Henry III convened a council here to resolve the crisis of three rival popes.

⏱ 35 min
5

Palazzo Doebbing - Former episcopal palace until 1986, restored between 2010 and 2018. The museum occupies five levels and blends ancient and contemporary art: sculptures, architectural fragments, and frescoes from surrounding churches.

⏱ 50 min

Activities

Walk through the Archaeological Park - Lazio's smallest regional nature park (7 hectares) connects all the sites via shaded trails winding between oaks and meadows. At the summit, the 17th-century Villa Savorelli overlooks the landscape, surrounded by an Italian garden featuring a boxwood labyrinth.

Ronciglione 3
1

Historic center of Ronciglione - Named "Borgo dei Borghi" by RAI television, this town of 8,500 inhabitants blends medieval and Renaissance architecture on a volcanic spur at 441 meters elevation. Climb Corso Umberto I (nicknamed "Montecalvo")—the steep alleys reveal palaces of the Farnese family, who transformed Ronciglione into a prosperous industrial hub with ironworks, paper mills, and armories along the Rio Vicano.

⏱ 60 min
2

Fontana Grande - Attributed to architect Antonio Gentili da Faenza (school of Vignola), this monumental fountain marks the passage between the lower Renaissance town and the upper medieval quarter.

⏱ 20 min
3

Museo delle Ferriere (Ironworks Museum) - Housed in the town's oldest forge, this museum traces Ronciglione's industrial epic. From the 15th century onward, 15 forges operated along the Rio Vicano. The last one closed only in 1992. The building preserves the hydraulic mechanisms that transformed water power into energy.

⏱ 45 min
4

Cathedral of San Pietro e Santa Caterina - The cathedral dominates the main square. Its baroque interior houses 17th-century paintings. In 1728, Pope Benedict XIII elevated Ronciglione to the rank of "Città" (city).

⏱ 30 min

Activities

Lake Vico circuit - This volcanic crater lake, formed approximately 100,000 years ago, is Italy's highest and one of its best-preserved. Protected as a nature reserve since 1982, it shelters herons, falcons, and tortoises. According to legend, Hercules planted his club in the ground; when he pulled it out, water gushed forth and created the lake. Marked trails, equipped beaches, and picnic areas line the shores.

Vetralla

★★☆☆☆
Vetralla 1
Vetralla 2
1

Historic center of Vetralla - A major stop on the Via Francigena, Vetralla occupies a hill inhabited since the 6th century BC. Enter through Piazza Marconi and its medieval fountain, then follow Via Cassia Interna: Palazzo Franciosoni (Vignola school), the 18th-century Duomo, and two baroque fountains on Piazza Umberto I punctuate the walk.

⏱ 50 min
2

Church of San Francesco - Vetralla's oldest, erected in the 7th century then rebuilt in Romanesque style in 1207. The peperino stone facade incorporates Roman fragments from the nearby Forum Cassii. Inside: a Cosmatesque pavement, a marble tabernacle from Andrea Bregno's workshop (15th century), and the sarcophagus of condottiere Briobris, who died in 1353 at age 33.

⏱ 40 min
3

Etruscan Necropolis of Norchia - 15 km from Vetralla, one of Etruria's most spectacular necropolises. The tombs (4th–2nd centuries BC) are carved into tufa cliffs: some reproduce Doric temple facades with pediments, friezes, and busts. The Lattanzi tomb, dated around 320 BC, featured a facade nearly 18 meters high with two levels of columns. The Via Cava Buia, a 400-meter gallery cut through rock with 10-meter-high walls, once led to the city. A semi-abandoned site—bring sturdy shoes.

⏱ 90 min

Activities

Forum Cassii and Santa Maria di Forcassi - 2 km from Vetralla, the ruins of the ancient Roman mansio (relay station on the Via Cassia) appear on the Tabula Peutingeriana, Europe's oldest road atlas. The medieval chapel preserves 14th-century frescoes beneath a partially collapsed roof. The Order of Hospitallers cared for pilgrims here during the Middle Ages.

Viterbo

★★★☆☆
Viterbo 1
Viterbo 2
Viterbo 3
1

Palazzo dei Papi (Papal Palace) - Built from 1257 onward for Pope Alexander IV fleeing Rome. The Sala del Conclave hosted the longest papal election in history: 33 months (1268–1271). Exasperated, the Viterbese locked the cardinals in—hence the word "conclave" (cum clave, "with a key")—then tore off the roof to expose them to the elements. Gregory X was finally elected. The Loggia of Blessings (1267), with its trilobed Gothic arches, offers sweeping valley views.

⏱ 75 min
2

Cathedral of San Lorenzo - A 12th-century Romanesque edifice, remodeled during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Tradition holds it was built atop the foundations of a temple dedicated to Hercules. In 1277, part of the adjacent palace collapsed onto Pope John XXI, killing him—the only pope to die in a construction accident.

⏱ 40 min
3

Museo del Colle del Duomo - The ticket grants access to the palace, cathedral, and museum. Collections include Etruscan and Roman archaeological finds, papal objects, reliquaries, and paintings. French audio guide available.

⏱ 50 min
4

San Pellegrino Quarter - One of Italy's best-preserved medieval centers. The "case a ponte" (houses connected by upper-floor arches), profferli (external stone staircases), towers, and small squares have scarcely changed since the 13th century. Every September 3rd, the Macchina di Santa Rosa—a 30-meter tower weighing 5,100 kilograms—is carried through the streets by the facchini: this ritual is inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.

⏱ 60 min
5

Fontana Grande and Palazzo dei Priori - Viterbo's largest fountain stands on the piazza bearing its name. The Palazzo dei Priori (seat of civil power) houses halls adorned with Mannerist frescoes and the Cappella Palatina painted by Filippo Cavarozzi.

⏱ 40 min
6

Villa Lante in Bagnaia - 5 km from Viterbo, this Renaissance garden attributed to Vignola (1560s) is considered one of Italy's most perfect. The central water axis descends 230 meters along four terraces: cascades, a chain of water sculpted in stone, a stone table crossed by a channel (to cool dishes during open-air dinners), and Giambologna's Fountain of the Four Moors. The 16th-century hydraulic system still functions without modern pumps.

⏱ 75 min

Activities

Bathing in the Bullicame thermal springs - Mentioned by Dante in Canto XIV of Inferno and sketched by Michelangelo, these sulfurous springs gush at 58°C from a natural crater. Already frequented by Etruscans and Romans, they attracted numerous popes: Nicholas V built a thermal palace in 1450. Several open-air pools are free to access (Piscine Carletti, Bullicame), open year-round.

Bomarzo

★★☆☆☆
Bomarzo 1
Bomarzo 2
1

Sacro Bosco (Park of the Monsters) of Bomarzo - Created from 1552 onward by Prince Vicino Orsini, this 3-hectare park is the world's oldest modern sculpture garden. After his wife Giulia Farnese's death, Orsini commissioned architect Pirro Ligorio (who completed St. Peter's Basilica after Michelangelo) to create dozens of colossal creatures carved from peperino: an ogre with gaping mouth, an elephant bearing a combat tower, two wrestling giants, a dragon, sphinxes. The leaning house, built on a tilted block, disorients visitors. Abandoned for 400 years, the park was rediscovered by Salvador Dalí in 1938.

⏱ 120 min
2

Tempietto of the Sacro Bosco - Atop the hill, this small temple attributed to Vignola crowns the route. Its dome echoes in miniature that of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. Vicino Orsini dedicated it to his wife's memory.

⏱ 20 min
3

Etruscan Pyramid of Bomarzo - In the sacred wood, a peperino monolith carved into a stepped pyramid puzzles archaeologists. Likely a sacrificial altar or rock sanctuary, it remains shrouded in mystery. Access via a forest trail.

⏱ 45 min
4

Vitorchiano, the "suspended village" - 15 minutes from Bomarzo, this grey peperino village seems to merge with the volcanic cliff. Classified among the Borghi più Belli d'Italia and awarded the Touring Club's Bandiera Arancione. The profferli (external staircases), the 13th-century fountain on Piazza Roma, and the Capitoline Wolf engraved on facades recall the unique status of "land faithful to Rome" granted in 1265. Director Mario Monicelli filmed "L'armata Brancaleone" here with Vittorio Gassman in 1966.

⏱ 60 min
5

Moai of Vitorchiano - In 1990, eleven craftsmen from Easter Island (Rapa Nui) sculpted this 6-meter, 3-ton statue from a local peperino block—the only Moai in the world made outside Easter Island using ancestral techniques. Tuscia's volcanic peperino resembles Rapa Nui stone. The statue stands watch over the belvedere overlooking the Vezza valley.

⏱ 20 min

Activities

Vitorchiano belvedere - From Largo Padre Ettore Salimbeni (where the Moai stands), the view plunges over the borgo clinging to its cliff, the Vezza valley, and the oak forests of the Cimini Mountains. Tuscia's best photo spot, especially in late afternoon light.

Civita Di Bagnoregio

★★★☆☆
Civita Di Bagnoregio 1
Civita Di Bagnoregio 2
Civita Di Bagnoregio 3
1

Civita di Bagnoregio - Founded by Etruscans over 2,500 years ago, this "Città che Muore" ("dying city," a nickname given by writer Bonaventura Tecchi) counts only about ten permanent residents. The village sits atop a tufa and clay spur that erodes a little more each year. Of the five original medieval gates, only Porta Santa Maria survives. Inside, the Etruscan urban grid (cardo and decumanus) remains visible beneath the medieval overlay.

⏱ 30 min
2

Civita footbridge - 300 meters long, 70 meters of elevation gain, 42 reinforced concrete pillars: this pedestrian bridge, built in 1965 after Germans destroyed the previous one in 1944, is the only access to the village. The steep climb transforms the approach into a kind of pilgrimage. Approximately 700,000 visitors cross it annually.

⏱ 25 min
3

Church of San Donato - On the borgo's main square, this church houses a wooden crucifix venerated since the 15th century. According to tradition, it spoke to a pious woman in 1499 to end a plague epidemic. Every Good Friday, the crucifix is carried in procession across the bridge to Bagnoregio.

⏱ 25 min
4

Cave of San Bonaventura and Bucaione - Beneath Civita's cliff face, an Etruscan chamber tomb bears the name of Saint Bonaventure: tradition holds that here Saint Francis healed the young Giovanni Fidanza, future Doctor of the Church. The "Bucaione," a deep Etruscan tunnel, pierces the rocky base and opens directly onto the Valley of the Calanchi.

⏱ 30 min

Activities

Sunset over the Valley of the Calanchi - From the Bagnoregio belvedere (before the bridge) or from Civita's Porta Sud, white clay ravines carve a lunar landscape between the Torbido and Chiaro watercourses. Constant erosion transforms this panorama season by season. Plan to be there around 6 PM in summer for raking light.

Montefiascone

★★☆☆☆
Montefiascone
1

Rocca dei Papi - Fortress built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III at Montefiascone's highest point. A favored summer residence for several popes thanks to fresh breezes and an impregnable position. Archaeological excavations are uncovering vestiges of Etruscan occupation. Climb to the tower's summit: the panorama embraces all of Lake Bolsena, the volcanic domes, and Orvieto in the distance.

⏱ 60 min
2

Cathedral of Santa Margherita - Its 17th-century dome, visible throughout the region, dominates Montefiascone's profile. Architect Michele Sanmicheli designed the general structure in the early 16th century. A fire ravaged it in 1670; it was restored and reopened in its current form in 1893. The neoclassical portal dates from the mid-19th century.

⏱ 40 min
3

Church of San Flaviano - An original construction on two superimposed levels: Romanesque-Gothic arcades below, 16th-century loggia above—and the two churches face opposite directions. The walls preserve medieval frescoes. Near the entrance, look for the tombstone of German bishop Johannes Defuk (died 1113), origin of the Est! Est!! Est!!! wine legend.

⏱ 40 min
Montefiascone

Activities

Panorama over Lake Bolsena - Europe's largest volcanic lake (114 km², 151 meters deep) spreads at Montefiascone's feet. Two small islands, Martana and Bisentina, emerge from the waters. From the Rocca dei Papi terrace, you can take in the entire caldera.

⏱ 30 min

Est! Est!! Est!!! wine tasting - The DOC appellation (since 1966) takes its name from a 12th-century legend: Bishop Johannes Defuk sent a scout ahead to mark good wine inns with "Est!" (there is!) on the door. At Montefiascone, the scout wrote "Est!" three times, so pleased was he with the wine. The bishop settled there... and never left. The white wine, based on Trebbiano and Malvasia, is produced on volcanic soils around the lake.

Acquapendente

★★☆☆☆
Acquapendente 1
Acquapendente 2
1

Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre - Nicknamed the "Jerusalem of Europe," this 9th-century basilica houses in its Romanesque crypt the world's oldest reproduction of Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre. Legend tells that Matilda of Westphalia, mother of Emperor Otto I, was traveling to Rome with mules laden with gold when the animals refused to advance at Acquapendente. A dream commanded her to build the church here. The 11th-century crypt—24 columns with all-different capitals forming nine naves beneath groin vaults—is a true "stone forest." The current facade is the work of Nicola Salvi, architect of Rome's Trevi Fountain.

⏱ 60 min
2

Historic center and Torre del Barbarossa - The former double circuit of walls preserves three gates, including the Torre Julia de Jacopo—named after a woman who in 1550 closed the gate under enemy fire to save the town from assault by Orsini troops. On the hill dominating the town, the clock tower is the last vestige of the fortress built by Emperor Henry IV in the 12th century.

⏱ 45 min
3

Bosco del Sasseto - 12 km from Acquapendente, near the village of Torre Alfina (classified among the Borghi più Belli d'Italia), this monumental forest shelters centuries-old oaks, beeches, and hornbeams whose twisted trunks grow between enormous moss-covered lava boulders. The atmosphere evokes a fairy-tale setting. The neo-Gothic castle of Torre Alfina, restored by Sienese architect Giuseppe Partini, overlooks the wood.

⏱ 90 min

Activities

Via Francigena stage - Acquapendente is the first Lazio town for pilgrims coming from the north. The Pilgrim House, steps from the cathedral, still welcomes walkers with 25 beds managed by the Confraternity of San Rocco. This is where Saint Roch allegedly performed his first miracle by healing plague victims in the 14th century.

⏱ 30 min

Pugnaloni and traditions - Every third Sunday in May, the Festival of the Madonna del Fiore commemorates the town's liberation from Frederick Barbarossa's yoke in 1166. The "Pugnaloni," giant mosaics composed of flower petals and leaves, are carried in procession through the streets. A tradition unique in all of Italy.
