Sacro Bosco (Park of the Monsters) of Bomarzo - Created from 1552 onward by Prince Vicino Orsini, this 3-hectare park is the world's oldest modern sculpture garden. After his wife Giulia Farnese's death, Orsini commissioned architect Pirro Ligorio (who completed St. Peter's Basilica after Michelangelo) to create dozens of colossal creatures carved from peperino: an ogre with gaping mouth, an elephant bearing a combat tower, two wrestling giants, a dragon, sphinxes.
