Chania's Venetian harbour ranks among the most captivating waterfronts in Greece: a sweeping arc of pastel-washed quays crowned with Renaissance façades, anchored by the Egyptian lighthouse perched at the jetty's end—rebuilt in the 19th century atop the foundations of a 16th-century Venetian original. Arrive in late afternoon when the light softens—this is where locals gather for their coffee, and the square pulses with life well past midnight.
⏱ 60 minRight at the harbour's edge, the Mosque of the Janissaries rises with its pale pink domes—the very first structure the Ottomans built after seizing Chania in 1645, following a brutal 57-day siege. The original minaret vanished during the 1941 bombardments. Step inside if there's an exhibition on: the acoustics and filtered light inside are worth experiencing, even without artworks on display.
⏱ 30 minLose yourself in the maze of the old town, drifting between the Ottoman quarter of Splantzia and the Venetian quarter of Topanas. In Splantzia, seek out the Church of Agios Nikolaos: erected by Dominican friars around 1320, converted into a mosque in 1645 with the addition of a minaret, then reconverted to an Orthodox church in 1918—and the 35-meter minaret stayed put, making this the only building in Crete with both a bell tower and a minaret standing side by side.
⏱ 75 minWalk along the waterfront toward the Venetian arsenals (Neoria): these are the remnants of 15th-century shipyards where Venice's war galleys took shape—35-meter hulls assembled beneath these grand stone vaults. There were once seventeen; seven survive. In the main building, check out the reproduction of a 15th-century BC Minoan ship displayed on the floor. The lighthouse jetty begins right next door.
⏱ 45 minClimb up to Firkas Fortress, built in 1629 to defend the harbour entrance: this is where the Greek flag was first hoisted over Crete in 1913, after four centuries of Ottoman rule. Today it houses the Maritime Museum of Crete—ancient ship models, fishing tools, the story of the Cretan fleet. The terrace on the ramparts offers the finest elevated view of the harbour and the White Mountains rising beyond.
⏱ 45 minChania's covered market, built between 1909 and 1913 on the model of Marseille's market hall, forms a cross and brims with Cretan cheeses, dried herbs, olive oil, thyme honey, and raki. The seafood stalls are particularly striking in the morning. Budget a good hour to wander through without resisting temptation.
⏱ 60 minTasting tour at the covered market in the morning: stalls open early and vendors are far more talkative before tourists arrive. Sample the graviera (aged Cretan cheese), thyme honey, and if you dare before noon, a glass of raki with the regulars at the corner taverna counter—it's a local institution.
⏱ 60 minSunset from the lighthouse jetty: walk along the breakwater (about 10 minutes from the arsenals) to reach the Egyptian lighthouse. The view of the illuminated harbour and backlit Venetian ramparts is one of the most photographed scenes in Crete—arrive 30 minutes before sunset to claim a good spot.

The Samaria Gorge, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981, ranks among the longest gorges in Europe at 16 kilometers. The trail descends from Xyloskalo at 1,230 meters elevation down to the Libyan Sea—a drop of 1,200 meters. The walls soar to 300 meters and narrow to just 3 meters at the "Iron Gates." Along the route you'll traverse forests of parasol pines, plane trees, and cypresses, with a solid chance of spotting the kri-kri—the wild goats endemic to Crete that exist nowhere else on Earth.
⏱ 360 minChania's Archaeological Museum moved in 2020 from its former Franciscan monastery to a modern building 2.5 kilometers from the harbour. Its collections span from the Neolithic to the Roman era, with pieces truly worth the journey: Linear A and B tablets, Minoan gold jewelry, and especially Roman mosaics from the 3rd century AD still striking in their precision. Budget an hour and a half—the presentation is clear and well-documented.
⏱ 90 minMake a detour to the Etz Hayyim Synagogue in the Topanas quarter. In 1944, German soldiers deported the entire Jewish community of Chania, loaded onto the ship Tanais—which was torpedoed by the British before reaching its destination. The synagogue, fallen into ruin, has been carefully restored to preserve this memory. It's a spare, quiet space that contrasts sharply with the harbour's bustle just two streets away. Free admission.
⏱ 30 minFull-day Samaria Gorge excursion: depart very early (first bus from Chania around 6-7am, 1-hour journey to Xyloskalo). The 16-kilometer descent takes 5 to 7 hours depending on your pace. At Agia Roumeli, a swim in the Libyan Sea awaits before catching the return boat. Organization is key: book the boat ticket in advance, especially in July-August. If you lack fitness training, the first 2-3 kilometers from Agia Roumeli ("the small hike" going upstream) offer a taste of the gorge without the full distance.

Rethymnon's Fortezza dominates the town from Paleokastro hill. The Venetians began construction on September 13, 1573, following two devastating Ottoman attacks in 1562 and 1571. Yet it fell to the Ottomans in late November 1645 after just 23 days of siege—cholera inflicted more damage than the assault itself. Today you can walk the ramparts and take in panoramic views of the town, harbour, and sea. Arrive early before 10am: the light is beautiful and tourists are scarce.
⏱ 75 minRethymnon's old town is considered one of the best-preserved Venetian towns in the Mediterranean. Enter through the Porta Guora—one of the few surviving sections of the ancient fortifications—and let yourself wander: doorways carved with Venetian coats of arms, Ottoman fountains, minarets piercing the roofline. If you get lost, spot the Fortezza or the harbour—the area is compact and you'll find your bearings within minutes.
⏱ 90 minThe Neratze Mosque, on the Venetian square, offers a striking example of Rethymnon's layered history: originally the Church of Santa Maria belonging to the Augustinian monastery, built during Venetian times. In 1657 the Ottomans converted it into a mosque and added three domes and the town's tallest minaret. If you pass by and hear music floating out, step inside—the building now houses the municipal conservatory.
⏱ 30 minThe Rimondi Fountain, built in the late 16th century by the Venetian governor of the town, is one of the old town's liveliest meeting points. Its three lion heads still pour water—locals simply call it "the Fountains." All around, cafés and tavernas installed in Renaissance buildings create a vibrant atmosphere from morning onward.
⏱ 20 minRethymnon's Venetian harbour is more intimate than Chania's: a small protected basin, colorful boats moored in front of tavernas whose terraces spill right onto the water. The lighthouse overlooking it is Greece's second-largest Egyptian lighthouse, built in the 1830s. Reserve your dinner table here—grilled fish facing the boats is the local way.
⏱ 45 min
Seaside promenade toward Rethymnon beach: a long golden sand beach stretches east of the harbour. It's the locals' favorite swimming spot, with calm, shallow water. In high season it gets crowded—go early morning or late afternoon.
⏱ 90 minIf you're in Rethymnon in summer, check out the Renaissance Festival: theater, music, and dance performances take place each year in the Erofili Theater, inside the Fortezza itself. A unique way to experience this monument at night.

Start with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum before heading to Knossos—in that order, the site takes on entirely new meaning. The museum ranks among the world's most important for Minoan civilization, with 22 galleries covering ten millennia. Look for the Bull-Leaping fresco, the Snake Goddess figurines, the bull's-head rhyton with gilded horns—and the Phaistos Disc with its 241 stamped symbols spiraling inward, still undeciphered to this day. Buy the combined museum + Knossos ticket—cheaper and more convenient.
⏱ 120 minKnossos was the political center of Minoan civilization—the oldest urban civilization in Europe. The palace covered 43,000 square meters with 1,300 rooms connected by labyrinthine corridors, which directly fed the myth of the Minotaur. Arthur Evans, who led excavations from 1900 onward, reconstructed certain sections in reinforced concrete—a controversial decision, but one that makes the site far more legible than a field of stones. Arrive at opening time at 8am or after 3pm to avoid the tour buses. In summer, book your ticket online—queues can exceed an hour.
⏱ 120 minHeraklion's heart revolves around Lions Square (Plateia Venizelou) and its 17th-century Morosini Fountain—four lions supporting a basin adorned with mythological bas-reliefs. The surrounding cafés buzz at all hours. From there, follow the Venetian walls for 3 kilometers: built from the 14th century onward, they convey the city's strategic importance during Venice's control of the eastern Mediterranean.
⏱ 60 minFinish with Koules Fortress, guarding the harbour entrance since the 16th century—the Venetians called it Rocca a Mare, "rock on the sea." Its walls still bear the stone Lions of Saint Mark. Climb to the roof: you'll get the best elevated view of the ramparts and the sea. Entry is inexpensive and the visit quick—30 minutes suffices.
⏱ 30 minEvening exploration of Heraklion's waterfront: along the harbour, a lively promenade lined with fresh fish tavernas. This is where Heraklion residents gather after work. Try dakos—the Cretan specialty made with barley rusk, tomato, mizithra cheese, and olive oil—before a more substantial meal at one of the tavernas.

Lake Voulismeni is the soul of Agios Nikolaos: a small circular lagoon connected to the sea by an artificial canal cut in 1867, ringed by red-rock cliffs and taverna terraces that shimmer in reflection. Legend says the goddess Athena bathed here and that the lake is "bottomless"—in reality it reaches 64 meters deep, which for such a small lake remains impressive. A stroll along its banks at sunset is the town's most popular activity.
⏱ 45 minSpinalonga Island is one of Crete's most moving sites. The Venetians built an impregnable fortress here from the 15th century onward—so impregnable it resisted the Ottoman conquest of Crete in 1669 and didn't fall until 1715, 46 years after the rest of the island. Then from 1903 to 1957, the Cretan government established Europe's last leper colony here: between 300 and 500 patients lived there, stripped of citizenship and cut off from the world. In 1957, with the discovery of antibiotics, the colony closed and the island was abandoned. You can reach it by boat from Plaka (10 min), Elounda (20 min), or Agios Nikolaos (1 hour). Plan 1.5 to 2 hours on site.
⏱ 120 minThe Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos, near Lake Voulismeni, often gets skipped in favor of Spinalonga—that's a mistake. It displays finds from eastern Crete found nowhere else: the "Goddess of Myrtos" adorned with whole shells, and especially a Minoan skull from the 2nd millennium found with a gold wreath—likely a royal or religious figure. Budget an hour, it's well documented.
⏱ 60 minPush on to the small Byzantine chapel of Agios Nikolaos, which gave the entire town its name. It's tucked into a cove away from the center, accessible by a path from the marina—10 minutes on foot. It preserves recently restored 14th-century frescoes, in a very peaceful setting. A good moment to catch your breath between visits.
⏱ 30 minTo reach Spinalonga from Agios Nikolaos, take the boat from the harbour—the crossing lasts about 1 hour and some circuits include a swimming stop in Mirabello Gulf before landing. If you prefer to save time, drive instead to Plaka (10 min) or Elounda (20 min), and return to Agios Nikolaos afterward. Ask about schedules as soon as you arrive in town—in high season boats often fill up by midday.
⏱ 240 minSwimming at Kitroplatia beach, a 5-minute walk from the center: the most accessible beach from Agios Nikolaos, with clear, shallow water. In the evening, waterfront tavernas serve fresh fish caught that morning.

Kazarma Fortress overlooks Sitia's harbour from the heights. Its name derives from the Italian Casa di Arma—"house of arms." Built in Byzantine times then reworked by the Venetians in the 13th century, it was partially destroyed by the pirate Barbarossa in 1538, then damaged again by the Ottomans in 1648. What remains now serves as an open-air theater for the annual Kornareia festival. The climb offers fine views of the harbour, waterfront, and Aegean Sea. Entry €2—open daily except Tuesday, 8am to 3pm.
⏱ 45 minDon't skip Sitia's Archaeological Museum on the grounds that you've already seen Heraklion. Here the pieces come from excavations in eastern Crete—Mochlos, Zakros, Palaikastro—and cover 4,000 years of history. The centerpiece: a Minoan necropolis of 252 tombs from the Early Bronze Age, with vases, jewelry, and gold seals testifying to a surprising refinement for such an ancient civilization. Budget an hour.
⏱ 60 minAbout ten kilometers east of Sitia, Toplou Monastery merits the detour. This 15th-century fortress-monastery owes its nickname to the Ottoman word "top"—cannon—because it possessed one to repel pirates. It withstood Ottomans, Venetians, and sheltered Greek resistance fighters during the Nazi occupation. Inside, a remarkable collection of Byzantine icons—and a shop where you'll find organic wine and olive oil produced by the monks on site.
⏱ 60 minVaï Beach is the postcard of eastern Crete: roughly 5,000 Phoenix theophrasti palms—a species endemic to Crete and southwestern Turkey—form Europe's largest natural palm forest and cascade down to fine sand. The entire grove has belonged to Toplou Monastery for centuries. Legend says the trees grew from date pits tossed into the sea by Phoenicians 2,000 years ago. In July-August it gets very crowded—arrive before 10am for tranquility.
⏱ 90 minEvening stroll along Sitia's waterfront: the harbour of this small town of 11,000 inhabitants is among the most authentic in Crete. Locals gather here for the evening meal at fish tavernas, and Cretan musicians sometimes play on the terraces on weekends. Taste the local specialties: stafidoto (raisin cake) and xerotigana (honey-drizzled fritters with thyme).
⏱ 90 minIf you have a car and the energy, push on to Kato Zakros, 45 kilometers south of Sitia: that's where Crete's fourth-largest Minoan palace stands, discovered in 1961. The site is still far less frequented than Knossos and offers a much more intimate atmosphere. To reach it, you can cross the Valley of the Dead (8 km hike, about 2 hours)—a Minoan gorge whose walls conceal dozens of tombs carved into the rock.
