Lasithi → Agios Nikolaos → Elounda → Sitia → Ierapetra → Heraklion → Rethymno → Chania
From the Lassithi plateau with its Venetian windmills, descend to the lagoons of Mirabello Gulf and the fortress-island of Spinalonga—Europe's last leper colony until 1957. Push on to Sitia and its unique palm forest, cross Heraklion with its Minoan treasures, then let Rethymnon unfurl its Venetian harbour before finishing in the Samaria Gorge. Ten days to cross Crete from east to west, from mountain to wild sea.

Arriving from Heraklion—reckon on 90 minutes' drive—or from Agios Nikolaos (75 minutes), you emerge onto a green basin 850 metres above sea level that nothing from the coast could have prepared you for: the Lassithi plateau, 11 km long and ringed by the Dikti Mountains, which rise to more than 2,100 m. What you see first are the cultivated fields and, here and there, restored windmills. The Venetians once installed as many as 5,000 of them to irrigate the land via a network of channels called linies. Stop at Seli Ambelou at the entrance to the plateau to see them lined up against the sky—it's the most photographed viewpoint in Lassithi.
⏱ 60 minThe Dikteon Cave, known as Zeus's Cave, perches at 1,025 metres above the village of Psychro. According to Greek mythology, this is where Rhea hid her son Zeus to save him from his father Cronos, who devoured his own children. Descending the 314 steps into the mountain's belly is moderately strenuous, but the reward is there: a forest of stalactites and an underground lake in an atmosphere that's frankly mystical. Bring a jumper—it's cool inside year-round, whatever the heat outside. The cave attracts more than 200,000 visitors a year; arrive early in the morning to explore without the crush.
⏱ 90 minOn the road climbing towards Lassithi, stop at the Kera Kardiotissa monastery, perched at 650 metres on the northern slopes of Dikti. Its earliest written mention dates from 1333. What makes it unique is the story of its miraculous icon: stolen three times by the Turks, it's said to have returned on its own three times. The third time they chained it to a marble column to stop it leaving—it came back anyway, bringing the column with it. You'll see the column in the courtyard and the chain beside the icon.
⏱ 45 minStop at Tzermiado, the plateau's 'capital'. Its folklore museum recreates two Cretan interiors: one traditional mountain dwelling, the other neoclassical from the post-Ottoman period. If you have time, push on to the Kronion cave at the village entrance—a Minoan cult site frequented since the Neolithic, far less known than the Dikteon Cave and often deserted.
⏱ 45 minAgios Georgios houses a museum dedicated to daily life on the plateau—better presented than its size suggests. You'll find a carefully reconstructed Cretan mountain house and a room devoted to Eleftherios Venizelos, the great Greek statesman whose family hails from the region. Between May and October, the museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00.
⏱ 40 minThe climb to the plateau from Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos is a pleasure in itself: the road crosses panoramic passes and perched villages. From Agios Nikolaos (around 75 minutes), the approach via the southern side of the Dikti massif is particularly beautiful. If you're coming from the north coast, stop at the Seli Ambelou viewpoint to see the windmills aligned with the valley below.
⏱ 60 minThe Seli windmill loop is an easy walk of about 3 km among the 19th-century stone windmills and orchards. The E4 trail also crosses the plateau for those who want to push on to the Minoan ruins of Mount Karfi, with a spectacular view of the coast. Bring closed shoes and water.
⏱ 90 minIn the tavernas of Psychro or Tzermiado, ask for stakovoutyro: a fermented butter from the Lassithi highlands, made by churning sheep's milk, which you eat on grilled bread. Rare—you'll find it practically nowhere else in Crete. If you're there in season, the taverna tables overflow with local produce too: fresh cheeses, wild thyme honey, mountain potatoes.
⏱ 45 minFor the evening meal, order ofto in a plateau taverna: a whole lamb cooked slowly in an earth oven with potatoes, garlic and wild herbs—meat falling off the bone, concentrated juices. Lassithi tavernas offer it mainly on Sundays as a traditional dish. Accompany it with a glass of Romeiko, the rustic, ancient red grape variety of eastern Crete.

Start with Lake Voulismeni, the beating heart of Agios Nikolaos. This 64-metre-deep lake, of karstic origin, was long thought bottomless—hence its local nickname—and ancient legend had it that Athena and Artemis bathed here. Since 1870, a narrow canal has linked it to the harbour. The tavernas and cafés that border it make it the ideal spot for a first pause. If you're there in July, don't miss the Cliff Diving Festival: divers from around the world leap from the cliffs overlooking the lake.
⏱ 30 minDon't pass by the Agios Nikolaos archaeological museum—it's the second most important in Crete after Heraklion. It traces the region's history from the Neolithic (around 5700 BC) to the Roman period. Its most famous treasure is the Goddess of Myrtos: a libation vessel shaped like a female figure with long outstretched arms, dating from around 2500 BC. Allow 60 to 90 minutes to tour it properly.
⏱ 90 minOn the road to Kritsa, stop 1 km before the village: the Panagia Kera church hides on the right-hand side, guarded by an old olive tree with a hollow trunk. It's the best-preserved Byzantine monument on the entire island, and the frescoes covering every interior wall are the reason why. The central nave dates from the 13th century; the two side naves were added in the 14th—one of them bears the exact date of 1348 painted on the wall, with the donor's portrait and his family. Photos without flash permitted.
⏱ 60 minKritsa, perched at 300 metres altitude 9 km from Agios Nikolaos, is one of Crete's largest villages with its staircase lanes, stone houses and weavers who still work on traditional looms. The embroidery and local fabrics are renowned throughout the region. In the evening, once the tour coaches have left, the village becomes surprisingly quiet and authentic.
⏱ 60 minFrom Kritsa, push on to the Lato site, 3 km away: a Dorian city founded in the 7th century BC, perched on two hills facing the Gulf of Mirabello. You'll find paved streets, monumental staircases, an agora and temple foundations—and a view over the sea and mountains worth the detour alone. Reckon on 45 minutes to an hour for a leisurely visit. Bring water: there's no shade at the site.
⏱ 60 minStroll around Lake Voulismeni in the evening: it's when the locals of Agios Nikolaos gather on the café terraces lining both banks, linked by a bridge. The buzz rises as night falls. If you're there early in the morning, the lake is strikingly calm and the reflections of the cliff in the water are otherworldly.
⏱ 45 minExplore Kritsa for its craft workshops: weaving, embroidery, pottery and local products (honey, oil, herbs) are sold directly by artisans in the lanes. The village also has several modest museums, including Kritsotopoula House, a folklore museum recreated in a former traditional dwelling.
⏱ 60 minIf you're curious about the most ancient Cretan cuisine, order xinochondros in an Agios Nikolaos taverna: a dried fermented paste made from sheep's cheese and cracked wheat, simmered as a soup with seasonal vegetables. It has a distinctly tangy, salty taste—an acquired one, let's say. Accompany it with a glass of white Vilana, the indigenous Cretan grape variety, light and fresh.
⏱ 45 minSwim at Almyros beach, about 2 km south of Agios Nikolaos: a long fine-sand beach with calm waters, well equipped and less crowded than the town-centre beaches. Several beaches then string along towards Istro and Pachia Ammos along Mirabello Bay—ideal for a late afternoon if you're returning from Lato or Kritsa.

Spinalonga is the most history-laden place in all of eastern Crete. The Venetians began fortifying this 34-hectare rocky islet in 1579 to protect the Gulf of Mirabello—the fortress was so solid that even after the Ottomans took Crete in 1669, it held out another 46 years before falling in 1715. Entry is through a long dark tunnel that the lepers deported here between 1903 and 1957 nicknamed 'Dante's gate'. For over 50 years, between 300 and 400 patients lived here as a community—with a baker, a barber, a priest. The last inhabitant, a priest, left the island only in 1962. Allow 90 minutes to tour it completely. From Plaka (5 min crossing) or from Elounda (20 min), boats run regularly in high season.
⏱ 120 minBetween Elounda and the peninsula, a causeway runs along the ancient city of Olous, swallowed by the sea since antiquity. At low tide, you can see with the naked eye the mosaics of a 4th-century early Christian basilica—just below the surface, among the rocks. With a mask and snorkel, the walls of the old acropolis are visible in shallow water. Swimming in this small lagoon sheltered from the wind is among the most pleasant in the region.
⏱ 45 minElounda is the most comfortable base for this day. The resort is upmarket—international resorts have been here since the 1970s—but the waterfront of the original fishing village, the old salt flats between the town and the Olous peninsula, and the harbourside fish tavernas merit a detour outside the hotels. The view of Spinalonga from the lagoon beaches is one of the most beautiful in the region, especially in late afternoon.
⏱ 45 minPlaka is a fishing village 5 km north of Elounda, facing Spinalonga. It's the nearest departure point for the island (5 minutes' crossing) and also a remarkably preserved village with its harbour tavernas, colourful boats and nets drying in the sun. The day's grilled fish here is irreproachably fresh. Book an evening table to enjoy the sunset over the island.
⏱ 45 minThe boat excursion to Spinalonga is unmissable—but organize it early in the morning. From 10:00 in summer, groups arrive in waves and the vaulted passages become packed. Leaving from Plaka at 08:30 or 09:00, you've a good chance of exploring the fortress in relative calm. Bring water and a hat: there's practically no shade on the island.
⏱ 180 minAfter Spinalonga, swim in the lagoon between the Olous peninsula and Elounda: calm, shallow and remarkably clear waters. With a mask and snorkel, you can look for the underwater remains of the ancient city in shallow depths. The sandy beach on the road to the peninsula is one of the least crowded in the region.
⏱ 90 minFor breakfast or brunch, order sfougato in a taverna at Elounda harbour: a thick courgette omelette with sheep's cheese and Cretan herbs. In season, also notice the bunches of octopus drying in the sun outside Plaka tavernas—order it grilled, it's one of the best things you'll eat on this coast. A white Cretan Assyrtiko, mineral and dry, pairs perfectly.

Sitia is the easternmost of Cretan towns, and the least touristy—it lives at its own pace. Built as an amphitheatre facing the Aegean Sea, it was destroyed then abandoned in the 16th century before being repopulated from the mid-19th century onwards. Climb to the Venetian Kazarma fortress in late afternoon for a panoramic view over the bay—the walk from the harbour takes barely 10 minutes. Down below, the harbour welcomes fishing boats and ferries to the Dodecanese.
⏱ 60 minToplou Monastery lies about ten kilometres east of Sitia, amid a barren, lunar landscape. It's one of the most important and most fortified monasteries in Crete—its Turkish name 'Toplou' means 'armed with a cannon': pillaged by the Knights of Malta in 1530, destroyed by earthquake, rebuilt in the 17th century. Its icon museum houses the masterpiece of Ioannis Kornaros: the icon 'Megas ei Kyrie' (Great art Thou, O Lord), dated 1770, a composition in 57 zones with hundreds of faces. Open in summer from 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00.
⏱ 75 minThe Vaï palm forest, 24 km east of Sitia, is the largest natural palm forest in Europe, classified as a nature reserve. It shelters thousands of specimens of Phoenix theophrasti, the palm endemic to Crete and the southern coast of Turkey—a species that grows nowhere else in Europe. The beach bordering the palm forest has been awarded the Blue Flag. Arrive early: in summer the beach is stormed from mid-morning onwards.
⏱ 90 minThree kilometres north of Vaï, take the time to climb to the Itanos site: an ancient Phoenician city whose ruins—temples, basilicas, cisterns—spread across an almost deserted sandy hill. You'll very probably have the site to yourself. Below lie two wild beaches in isolated coves—ideal for snorkelling in crystalline waters, far from any infrastructure.
⏱ 60 minIf you have a full day to devote to Minoan Crete, descend to Kato Zakros (45 km from Sitia) for the palace of Zakros—the fourth-largest Minoan palace in Crete after Knossos, Malia and Phaistos. Built around 1900 BC, it faced the Orient: excavations have yielded elephant tusks, ivory, stone vases and objects from Egypt and the Near East. You can reach it directly by car, or via the Gorge of the Dead (8 km hike from Zakros village).
⏱ 75 minExplore Sitia harbour in the evening: the tavernas come alive around 20:00, locals play cards in traditional cafés and the promenade runs along the sea to Sitia beach, a long strip of fine sand. The Sitiotes are renowned in Crete for their kindness and musical culture—you might stumble on an impromptu terrace concert.
⏱ 90 minTo reach Zakros palace on foot, take the Gorge of the Dead starting from Zakros village: 8 km descending through a limestone canyon with vertiginous walls, dotted with caves that served as burials in Minoan times—hence the name. It's one of the most beautiful hikes in eastern Crete, shaded and cool even in summer. Allow 3 hours, bring closed shoes, and arrange to have a car waiting at the bottom in Kato Zakros.
⏱ 180 minAt the end of a meal in a Sitia taverna, order xerotigana: ribbons of dough fried in oil, drizzled with honey and scattered with sesame or crushed walnuts. It's the traditional festive dessert of eastern Crete, served at weddings and baptisms. Accompany them with Liatiko red, the region's indigenous grape variety, sweet and aromatic with notes of dried grapes.

Ierapetra holds a title few towns can claim: the southernmost in Europe, nicknamed 'the bride of the Libyan Sea'. Its position at the southern tip of the Cretan isthmus has made it a strategic crossroads since antiquity—the ancient city of Hierapytna was already famous in the 3rd century BC. Climb to Kales fortress, rebuilt in 1626, for a view over the fishing harbour—allow 30 minutes.
⏱ 45 minTwelve kilometres off Ierapetra, Chrissi island—'Golden Island'—is a protected, uninhabited nature reserve. It's famous for its forest of two-hundred-year-old Lebanese cedars, the only one in Europe, and for its white-sand beaches and intensely turquoise waters. The Greek government imposed access restrictions in summer from 2022 onwards—favour May-June or September-October to find it almost empty.
⏱ 60 minDescend into the lanes of Kato Mera, Ierapetra's old town: a medieval quarter with narrow alleys leading to the fishing harbour. You'll find the Ottoman mosque, a former Christian church converted under Turkish rule, and 'Napoleon's house'—an 18th-century dwelling where, according to local legend handed down since 1798, Bonaparte spent a night during his Egyptian expedition. Undocumented, but locals will tell you the story with infectious pride.
⏱ 45 minIerapetra's archaeological museum is small, quiet and often empty—the anti-Heraklion. You'll find collections ranging from the Minoan era to the Greco-Roman period: amphoras, decorated sarcophagi, statuettes and ceramics testifying to ancient Hierapytna's importance. Ideal for an hour mid-day.
⏱ 45 minThe boat excursion to Chrissi island is the day's highlight. Book the morning crossing (departure around 10:00) to have maximum time on the island. Once landed, follow the marked trails to the cedar forest—the scent of resin under the centuries-old trees, with the turquoise sea shining through the trunks, is striking. Belegrina beach, covered in a carpet of bleached fossil shells, is a unique natural curiosity. Bring your lunch: the island's only taverna is rudimentary.
⏱ 240 minExplore the old town on foot: start from Kales fortress, then through the lanes of Kato Mera, the Ottoman mosque, Napoleon's house, the 17th-century Venetian fountain and the lanes leading to the waterfront. The waterfront promenade runs along a long grey-golden sand beach to the modern quarters—the ideal spot for a final sea swim late in the day.
⏱ 75 minFor dinner, settle into a waterfront taverna and order chtapodi krasato: octopus simmered long in red wine with onions and herbs, until it's meltingly tender. Finish with loukoumades, fried doughnuts served hot drizzled with honey and dusted with cinnamon. Tsikoudia usually arrives without asking, as a late-evening digestif.

Plan to arrive at Knossos as soon as it opens at 08:00—groups arrive from 10:00 onwards and the site becomes stifling in summer. This Minoan palace built around 1900 BC and remodelled after an earthquake around 1700 BC covered more than 20,000 m² with some 1,300 rooms: administrative offices, sanctuaries, workshops and royal quarters, all linked by labyrinthine corridors that probably inspired the Minotaur myth. Pay close attention: the frescoes visible on site are copies; the originals are in the archaeological museum. British archaeologist Arthur Evans, who excavated the site from 1900 to 1935, reconstructed the palace in reinforced concrete—a highly controversial decision that explains the bright, somewhat artificial colours of certain zones.
⏱ 90 minVisit the Heraklion archaeological museum before or after Knossos—a combined ticket lets you enter both at a better rate. This museum, founded in 1883 and housed in a building renovated until 2014, is Greece's second museum by visitor numbers and holds the world's largest collection of Minoan objects. Don't miss the four masterpieces: the Snake Goddess in faience (around 1600 BC) discovered at Knossos, the black steatite rhyton shaped like a bull's head with rock-crystal eyes, the fresco of the Bull-Leaping, and above all the Phaistos Disc—a fired clay disc discovered in 1908, covered with 242 signs in a spiral belonging to a script still undeciphered to this day.
⏱ 90 minThe Koules fortress dominates the old harbour entrance, at the end of the jetty. Built by the Venetians between 1523 and 1540 on a site fortified since the 9th century, this massive Rocca al Mare was constructed to counter the Ottoman threat in the time of Suleiman the Magnificent. Its outer walls reach 9 metres thick. It reopened in 2016 with a permanent exhibition—including pieces brought up from the seabed by Cousteau's team in 1976. Climb to the terrace: the view over the harbour and city is Heraklion's best.
⏱ 45 minPush open the door of Saint Titus Cathedral in the city centre. This church dedicated to Crete's patron saint—Titus, disciple of Saint Paul—has a turbulent history: built in the Byzantine era, converted to a mosque under the Ottomans, it was returned to Christian worship in 1925. It houses a relic of Saint Titus, brought to Venice when the Ottomans took Crete in 1669 and returned to Heraklion in 1966.
⏱ 20 minJust beside the cathedral stands the Loggia, a Venetian edifice rebuilt in 1628 that served as a meeting place for Candia's nobility (Heraklion's former name). Now the town hall, this building with its Renaissance porticos perfectly illustrates Venice's imprint on the city. Spend a few minutes walking around it—the façade is one of the old town's most elegant.
⏱ 20 min
Leave for Knossos first thing in the morning—allow 90 minutes to 2 hours on site. Absolutely take an audioguide or local guide: without explanations, it's very difficult to distinguish original ruins from Evans's concrete reconstructions, and the site loses much of its meaning. A guide will also stop you from missing the Royal Road, considered Europe's oldest paved road.
⏱ 90 minFollow up with the archaeological museum—ideally after Knossos, to see the originals where you'd seen only copies. Allow 90 minutes minimum. The practical tip: buy the combined museum + Knossos ticket, valid 3 days—you save on both entries and avoid the queue at the museum ticket office.
⏱ 90 minIn the evening, head back towards the old Venetian harbour for golden hour. The tavernas lining the harbour serve seafood and grilled fish facing the illuminated fortress. If you arrive before sunset, walk to the jetty's end: the view over the city and the hinterland mountains is striking.
⏱ 90 minTake advantage of your Cretan evening to taste dakos, the cornerstone of local cuisine: a barley rusk soaked in olive oil, topped with fresh tomato and feta, scattered with oregano. Accompany it with a glass of raki (or tsikoudia), the local eau-de-vie distilled from grape pomace—served chilled and often offered at meal's end.

If Knossos gave you Minoan Crete, the historical museum gives you everything else: Byzantium, Venice, the Ottomans and 20th-century Crete up to the Second World War. Don't miss the room devoted to El Greco—Dominikos Theotokopoulos was Cretan, born around 1541 in Fodele, and the only work by him kept in Crete is here. Also look for the reconstruction of Nikos Kazantzakis's library, the author of Zorba the Greek, born in Heraklion in 1883—an intimate and moving room.
⏱ 75 minMake the detour to the Martinengo bastion, in the Venetian walls encircling the city—these ramparts rank among the best-preserved in the entire Mediterranean. You'll find Nikos Kazantzakis's tomb, who himself chose his epitaph: 'I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I am free'. You can climb certain sections of ramparts; the view over the city from the walkway is worth the effort.
⏱ 45 minTake a tour down 1866 Street, the liveliest covered market in the city, where locals actually do their shopping. You'll find aged graviera, fresh mizithra, mountain thyme honey, aromatic herbs and marinated olives—all at better prices than at the harbour. Plan to pass through in the morning: some stalls close around 14:00, especially at weekends.
⏱ 45 minIf you have a car, the excursion to Phaistos palace (78 km south-west) is truly worth the journey. Crete's second Minoan palace after Knossos, Phaistos is far less crowded and altogether more authentic: no concrete reconstruction here, just open-air ruins on a plateau overlooking the Messara plain with Mount Psiloritis in the background (2,456 m, Crete's highest peak). This is where the famous Phaistos Disc was found, now in Heraklion museum.
⏱ 90 minThe morning in Heraklion is ideal for leisurely exploring the old town streets around Venizelou Square, with its Morosini fountain from 1628—locals simply call this spot 'Lions Square' because of the carvings on the old basin. The surrounding cafés are perfect for a Greek coffee while watching the morning buzz before hitting the road.
⏱ 60 minIf you make the excursion to Phaistos, plan to stop en route at Agia Triada, just 3 km from the palace. This small Minoan site has yielded some of the finest works in Heraklion museum, including the Agia Triada Sarcophagus and the Harvester Vase. Allow 30 to 45 minutes on site.
⏱ 45 minCretan vineyards merit a stop: indigenous grape varieties like vidiano (aromatic white with notes of citrus and white flowers) or kotsifali (fruity, gentle red) are found practically only on the island. If you pass through the Messara plain on the way to Phaistos, several cellars offer tastings—ask at your hotel for current addresses.
⏱ 60 minIn Heraklion, taste kalitsounia, little parcels of fine pastry filled with mizithra and aromatic herbs. They're found in both sweet versions—with honey and cinnamon—and savoury. Town-centre bakeries generally have them at all hours.

Climb to the Fortezza late in the day rather than mid-afternoon—the light on the sea from the western bastions is far more beautiful, and the heat less brutal. This Venetian fortress, whose construction began on 13 September 1573, was designed to shelter Rethymnon's entire population in case of Ottoman attack—but for lack of budget, only the military section was completed. Result in 1645: 8,500 people crammed into a space planned for far fewer, and the governor had to capitulate after only 23 days of siege. Spot the mosque of Sultan Ibrahim inside the walls—its massive dome is the direct legacy of the Ottoman period.
⏱ 60 minGet lost in the old town lanes without a precise plan—it's the best way to visit Rethymnon. Look for the Rimondi fountain (1626), with its lion heads spouting water in the heart of a shaded little square. Look up: the minarets piercing the rooftops recall two centuries of Ottoman presence, including the Grand Minaret, sole survivor standing from the Neratze mosque, converted into a concert hall. This blend of carved Venetian doorways and Ottoman moucharaby windows is unique in the Mediterranean—you'll see this nowhere else.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening, head down to Rethymnon's Venetian harbour—smaller and far less crowded than Heraklion's, making it one of the island's most pleasant. The lighthouse at the jetty's end dates from the 19th-century Egyptian occupation. Settle into a sea-facing taverna for grilled fish: the menu is often simple, the produce fresh and the atmosphere, as night falls, worth lingering for.
⏱ 45 minTwenty-three kilometres south-east of Rethymnon, Arkadi monastery is the most emotionally charged historical site in all Crete. Its current fortress-like structure dates from the 16th century, with a church (katholikon) completed in 1587—a jewel of the Cretan Renaissance. But what made Arkadi famous throughout Europe is the drama of 8 November 1866: surrounded by the Ottoman army, superior Gabriel Marinakis ordered the powder magazine blown up rather than surrender. Of the 964 people sheltering there—fighters but mostly women and children—most perished. Plan to have shoulders and knees covered to enter.
⏱ 75 min
Start with the Fortezza in the morning before the heat, then descend into the old town lanes to wander. Cretan craft shops—embroidery, ceramics, silver jewellery—are concentrated around Arkadiou and Souliou streets. Rethymnon is less touristy than Heraklion or Chania, giving it a more relaxed pace.
⏱ 90 minThe excursion to Arkadi monastery requires about half a day (1 hour each way by car + visit). Return via the hinterland village road—Episkopi village with its springs, or Margarites known for its pottery workshops, merit a 20-minute stop.
⏱ 60 minIn the evening at the harbour, taste gamopilafo—literally 'wedding rice'. This traditional Cretan festive dish is prepared with lamb simmered long in its broth, in which rice then cooks until creamy, bound with butter and lemon juice. You'll find it in old town tavernas, often as the daily special.
⏱ 60 minFor dessert, ask for mizithra with local honey. This fresh sheep's or goat's cheese, with a texture close to ricotta, is eaten on the spot in cheese shops or as dessert in most tavernas—drizzled with Cretan thyme honey and scattered with walnuts.

Start with a slow stroll along the Venetian harbour to the lighthouse at the jetty's end—it's the best vantage point over the colourful houses lining the basin. This lighthouse built by the Venetians in the 16th century, then rebuilt by the Egyptians in the 19th century, rises 21 metres and is one of the world's oldest lighthouses still standing. The harbour itself was built around 1320: you're walking on infrastructure that has guided merchant fleets for seven centuries. Plan to return at sunset—the atmosphere is of an altogether different order.
⏱ 60 minOn the harbour itself, don't miss the Hassan Pasha mosque—also called the Janissaries' mosque or Yali Tzami. Built shortly after the Ottomans took Chania in 1645, by an Armenian architect, it's the first mosque ever erected in Crete. Its architecture is distinctive: a cubic building topped with a main dome, flanked by a portico with seven small domes. It's now used as an exhibition space. Just beside, the Venetian arsenals (Neoria)—23 vaulted stone halls built in the 16th century to shelter and repair the fleet—are among the few surviving examples of this type in the Mediterranean.
⏱ 30 minGet lost in the old town lanes beyond the harbour. In the Topanas quarter, look for the Etz Hayyim synagogue, restored in the 1990s after nearly falling to ruin. It recalls a painful chapter: Chania's Jewish community, settled here for centuries, was entirely deported by the Nazis in 1944. Most deportees perished when the ship carrying them was torpedoed by a British submarine that had mistaken it for a warship.
⏱ 30 minJust behind the harbour, the Splantzia quarter is Chania's best-preserved—tourists come less, the atmosphere is more authentic. Spot Saint Nicholas church, a former 14th-century Dominican church converted to a mosque in 1645, which today presents the unique particularity of having both an Orthodox bell-tower and the old 35-metre Ottoman minaret still standing.
⏱ 30 minStop by the Agora, the covered market built in 1913 in the shape of a cross—an ashlar building worth seeing even if you've nothing to buy. You'll find all Cretan products gathered in one place: aged cheeses, thyme honey from the White Mountains, dittany of Crete (the island's endemic aromatic herb), olive oil and spices. It's the ideal spot to stock up before hitting the road to the gorge tomorrow.
⏱ 45 minDevote the morning to exploring the harbour and old town on foot. Chania is smaller and easier to walk than Heraklion. Skrydlof Street, parallel to the harbour, is entirely dedicated to leatherwork—bags, belts, sandals made on the premises. A typical, quality purchase.
⏱ 90 minStop by the covered Agora market before 13:00 to see it in full buzz. It's the chance to buy local products at more attractive prices than at the harbour: first-press olive oil, aromatic herbs (dittany of Crete, thyme, oregano), thyme honey and aged graviera cheeses.
⏱ 45 minFor dinner, settle into a taverna on the Venetian harbour by the arsenals—the atmosphere is less touristy than facing the lighthouse. Taste kouneli stifado (rabbit braised long with baby onions, red wine, cinnamon and cloves), one of the most characteristic braised dishes of Cretan mountain cooking. Accompany it with a glass of vidiano, the aromatic local white.
⏱ 90 minLate evening, wander towards the Splantzia quarter for the more local vibe. The bars and cafés on Splantzia Square are heavily frequented by locals—the atmosphere is distinctly less touristy than at the harbour, and prices a bit more reasonable.

The Samaria Gorge is among Europe's longest: 16 km of downhill hiking from the Omalos plateau (1,230 m altitude) to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The national park, created in 1962 and recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1981, shelters more than 300 plant species including 70 endemic to Crete. The walls rise to 600 m high, and the narrowest passage—the Sideroportes (Iron Gates)—narrows to 2.5 m wide. The gorge is open from May to late October, from 07:00 to 15:00 (last entry permitted). Absolutely plan your return organization: Agia Roumeli is accessible only by sea, and the last boat to Sougia or Hora Sfakion departs at 17:30.
⏱ 360 minThe Omalos plateau, at around 1,100 m altitude, is the last village before departure. Xyloskalo, the gorge entrance point, is 1 km away at 1,230 m. If you're driving, plan to leave Chania around 06:00—the road takes about 75 minutes and Xyloskalo car parks are free. A few tavernas around the plateau serve breakfast before the descent.
⏱ 30 minAgia Roumeli, the village at the gorge exit, is accessible only by sea or on foot. A few tavernas and guesthouses welcome hikers who want to avoid the race against time for the last boat—a solution we recommend if you're with family or want to enjoy the beach unhurriedly. Otherwise, the evening boat departs around 17:30 for Sougia (45 min) or Hora Sfakion (80 min), from where buses rejoin Chania.
⏱ 60 minIf the gorge is too strenuous or you prefer an alternative, Loutro village on the south coast is accessible only by boat from Hora Sfakion (20 min). White houses beside a turquoise cove, no cars, no road—Loutro is one of Crete's most preserved corners. A night or an afternoon on its beach is worth all the north island's tourist amenities.
⏱ 120 min
Leave as early as possible—before 07:00 if you can, for two reasons: avoid the crowds (up to 4,000 people daily in high season in July-August) and enjoy the coolness of the first hours in the canyon. The first 7 km cross a shaded forest of pines and cypresses and descend gradually; the last 4.5 km, at the canyon bottom, are the narrowest and most striking. Keep an eye out for kri-kri, the endemic wild goats that scale the walls—they're shy but far more visible in the morning. Bring plenty of water (springs along the route are drinkable), good hiking boots and sunscreen for the last exposed section.
⏱ 360 minOn arrival at Agia Roumeli, the Libyan Sea awaits right ahead. Plunge in—you'll have earned it. The water is clear and the bottom sandy. Take time to lunch in one of the village tavernas before catching the boat.
⏱ 90 minIf you're less sporty or travelling with young children, a reasonable alternative exists: leave from Agia Roumeli by boat, then hike up the gorge for 5 km to the Iron Gates—the most spectacular part—and descend again. Allow 3 hours return without the full logistics.
⏱ 180 minRakomelo is the winter version of raki: warmed with honey and cinnamon, it's drunk like a comforting digestif. In the mountain tavernas around Omalos, you'll often be offered it at the start of the meal in the cool morning temperatures—accept without hesitation, it's the local custom.
